Studio Projects B1 vs. MXL 990

I am looking to get a relatively cheap mic dedicated to vocals. I'm thinking the Studio Projects B1 or some cheap Marshall.

What do you guys think?

Do a search first...there's threads about both.

What I found: Raves for the B1 - thumbs down for the 990.

But I think at least they give you a nice mount and case to go with the 990 - I think someone said to keep the case and the mount and throw away the 990.

Ahah. I still have some research to do, I'll do some searches.

I've found the SP B1 to be a good, extremely versatile entry mic.

b1 is likely my next mic purchase. Hearing the pairing of a MXL v57 / v63/1006 whatever and a SP C1 on the "Testing Mics Again" song showed them to compliment each other well.

Well the choice between a B1 and an inexpensive MXL for vocals is an interesting one, but NOT the 990, which is not considered a good vocal mic at all. Rather as competition to the B1 you should be looking at the V67G or the V57M

I've just added the C1 onto that list.
IMO, the 797 Audio/Studio Projects C1 is an ok budget type mic... and I think both the B1 and 990 suck as main vocal mic's.

You also thought that the colored dots put on studio project mics made them 'matched pairs'.

Yeah, I remember when the studio project salesman said that too... but, I've owned and used the above mic's too... how about you?

I've owned neither, but I never assumed you could have professionally matched pairs over a series of, say, 10,000 mics, and track the minute variations of the matched pairs by a mere series of colored dots on the microphone. You'd run out of distinguisable colors and space on the microphone to put the dots to track all the possible variations. That's something a bar code would do, not a dab of paint. Oh, and you'd still sell the mics for dirt cheap, too.

After reading that insight into your thought process, or lack thereof, all your opinions have become suspect. I merely posted it so others who may take your opinion seriously can get some background into it.

My background with main vocal mics stops at about 12 different ones, so not that huge.

I have found however that the B1 is a fantastic mic, especially for the price. On my voice (and that of a few of my friends I record), I prefered it to an Octava MK319 or the AKG C3000 I had at my disposal.

Get a B1. You wont regret it.

Oh ok, so you don't know anything then... on the other hand, I've owned and used both and IMO the 707 Audio/Studio Projects B1 and the Marshall MXL990 both suck as main vocal mic's.

In other words... David doesn't really know anything about either mic.

Does that mean if you had more money you'd buy a better mic than the B1?

Given that we're limited to the SP B1 or Marshall, I would go with the B1. If it was me, and I had decided to go with Marshall, I spend the extra 10 or 15 bucks and get a V67. It's a much more useable vocal mic as comapred to the 990.

If you can, try both on your voice. That's really the best way to know.

I never said I owned one, I merely mentioned him to that the archives of this board have very different opinions of these two mics.

You really have a problem with reading comprehension, don't you?
Thick as a brick with a chip on your shoulder - what a great combination.

Cool, lots of replies. Lately I've been doing all that I can to conserve money. I want something other than a 57 to use for vocals.

I've owned/used both the C1 and B1.
They're both excellent vocal microphones for most singers IMHO.
The C1 and B1 sound very different BTW.

Unless you're adept at de-essing, the B series is better for sibilant singers IMO.

C1 has a "vintage" style tone.
B1 is "clean".

Chris

P.S. The quality of the performance is always
most important-not which microphone!

I merely pointed out that you don't know anything about the mic's. :D
