preferences? tips? warnings? advice?

are both basically general purpose, or is each particularly well suited to certain things? i have a studio projects c1 already and like it a lot. would the b1 be too similar? which would you get and why?

this is my first post, so please be gentle!

thanks!

The AT 2020 is an excellent mic. Lots of detail, nice smooth highs and an airiness that is found in your higher end mics and reminiscent of the older 414s, but with its own unique character. It excels on acoustic sound sources, background vocals and ambient micing (minimal low end boominess). The budget mics I've used tend to have a harshness in the midrange, which is not the case with the AT2020.

My recommendation is to pick up two of them (for a stereo pair).

The Studio Projects B Series mics actually sound quite a bit different from the C Series mics. The B1 is more neutral sounding than the C1. While it's not usually a first choice for vocals, people are generally very fond of it on acoustic guitar, guitar amps, drum overheads, and toms. I personally think that it's a great vaule for $100.

I don't have any experience with the AT2020, so I couldn't tell you how well it compares to the B1. The reviews of it have generally been favorable but not overwhelming.

Welcome, Raffi. I'd suggest using the search function here to check out the response to each of these mics. There's a ton of feedback on the B1, in particular, mostly very positive. I haven't used the 2020 so I can't comment on that. But I'm a big fan of the B1 for recording acoustic stringed instruments (no voice). For this purpose, at least, it's a fine mic for serious home recordists.

In the end, I'd guess that both of these mics are solid enough that factors such as your room dynamics and mic placement will be much more important than which mic you choose. But I know, it's fun choosing.

Good luck,
J.

I have both, and feel the SP B1 is usable on more sources than the AT-2020, because the AT-2020 has a pronounced rolloff on the bottom end. FWIW.

I`ve been using the B1 for some time now and I love it.
Its great on acoustic guitar, very good on amp micing, good as an overhead.
And very clear and neutral on Vocals, It really fits my voice quite good.
havent tried the 2020 though, but I`ve heard and read good things about it.
I think theire qualitywise quite simular.

I'm not familiar with the 2020 but I do use A. T. Pro2ax mics, from what I've heard they are similar. The Pro2ax is a good general purpose mic for vocals and acoustic instruments, it's not bad on electric if you aren't too loud. Price range $40-$50 depending on where you shop. Oh yeah, welcome to the forum.

I love the B1. I found it to be warmer on my rap-vocals than a rode nt1.... haven't recorded anything else with it yet, though.
