i just bought a pair of alesis m1 actives. the bass is heavier than the m1 passives (which i am about to put up on ebay with the amp).

i got the actives thinking their sound would be close to the passives (which i'm use to mixing on), but they aren't.

i got the scratch-n-dent special from zzounds for $300.

I have owned the alesis mkII passive monitors and I had a hard time getting a good mix while using them. I even had the alesis matching poweramp, the s150. I tried them in numerous rooms, acoustically correct and not, and still had trouble. The bass response is lacking, and I always had too much low end in the final mix. I now own a pair of KRK Rockit8's. They were a little more than you want to spend @ $500, but they are active, so you are really paying $250 for the monitors and $250 for the poweramp that is PERFECTLY MATCHED to them. They are really easy to mix with. The response is flat and really brings out the parts of mix that sound bad. Monitors should be flat and show you whats wrong with your mix, not make it sound good, or it will sound great in the control room and like crap everywhere else, and you will waste hours trying to compensate.
