I'm a big Fender fan, but I (as well as anyone else who played my PRS) have to agree that it cleans the clock of the old Fenders.

PRS are way overpriced. Wrap around tail pieces blow goats. So do their newer trem's.
They're not even the same guitar they used to be when PRS signed all of them.

The PRS is a beautiful solid body design and plays really well. My problem with them is the sound. Originally, they were supposed to be a compromise between a Gibson and a Fender (remember the lovely rotary knob?). Only they don't sound as good as a Gibson or a Fender, IMO.

I have to agree with Crawdad. I have a 1987 PRS Custom 24 that I have played on hundreds of gigs and while it looks awesome and plays very comfortably it just doesn't sound as good as my Stratocasters or my Gibson SG. The lead sounds are pretty cool but everything else just sounds kinda thin or harsh. I think it's hard to beat the neck pickup on a strat for an open sound, the in-between pickup sound for spank and funk, and the bridge for bite.....and nothing growls like a Gibson.

PRS vs Strats & Teles?! Apples and oranges. PRS is not a Fender style guitar. For a superior Fender style guitar go with G&L.

It's the old, GREAT, PRS tremelo. I played some newer trem equipped PRS's and it's just not the same at all.

I have an order in for a solid S Body from USA Custom Guitars. I was debating whether to go top or rear rout (went rear, because of the 5A Quilt top I'm getting). When I was considering a top rout, I asked Tommy, the owner, about the rout, and he said he doesn't think the swimming pool rout has a negative effect on the tone at all, and in his opinion (which I respect quite a bit), it can actually make the guitar more resonant and sound BETTER. (Similar to how a lighter strat body "supposedly" sounds better.)
Not that anyone cares...
And just for reference, I've never owned a G&L, but the ones I've played have been great, and I've heard nothing but positive things about them. (Generally that they are better than the equivalent Fenders... and I OWN a Fender. lol)

Playing in the studio I'm OK with a PRS but never live. They weigh too much and who wants to hang a boat anchor off their shoulder 4 hours a night. I would rather have a light, alder strat with a little less sustain vs. a PRS.

I bet you'd like my PRS then. It was one of the very few built using alder instead of mahogany for the back. With a maple neck and top. It weighs more than one of my strats and less than the other. This gives it a very unique tone, too. If I ever find another just like it, I'll buy it. But the older (1991 and back) PRS's are hard to find, especially in this setup. It's kind of like the Strat players PRS.
