hey guys. I am wiring a strat from zero, with old mics and pots and switches.
I am testing the pieces one by one.
So I first connect one of the mics to the amp and it works, though i get lots of buzz. I am using myself as ground, much as the strat is designed (via the bridge and strings).
The mic works and catches the sound, although the buzz is big.

Is this normal? If I attach the rst of it it will go away, or should the mic be noiseless by itself? Could it be that the mic is broken in some way?

I am just connecting the white cable to tip of a plug (via a clip cable), and the black one to the rest of the plug.

Thanks for your help. cheers Andrés

Single coil pickups hum. It's a part of thier charm. That's why double coil pickups are called "HUM"buckers.

The only thing you can do is wire the center pickup out of "faze" with the others. That means you'll want the current to go the other way on that one pickup. It'll still hum if your playing through only one, but when you turn on two the hum will go away.

Hmmmmm... You might be able to replace one of the tone pots with a second volume pot. Hook it up to only the center pickup and roll it off. That way you'd get the out of faze thing to get rid of the hum, but still have the tone of a single coil.

I've never tried this. For that matter, I've never even heard of it, but sence the volume pot comes after the pickups it should (?) work. I'm going to look deeper into this. I'd like to get rid of the hum in my strat as well.

if you want to remove the noise on your guitar, go here
an do the mod called Quieting the Beast. That's a great site.

Anyways, my doubt was if it was normal that you wire just a mic to the amp and it gives you hum.

that's the same link I posted.
The thing is: I am making the simplest connection possible, which is one mic connected to the amp. It makes a lot of buzz. Why?
