Strat. Loud buzzing.

Can you think of any reason why copper foil would work better than aluminium foil? Me, too.

They work the same. The disadvantage of aluminum is you can't solder to it.

i'm not sure on this but i think the copper stuff is typically thicker. that may make a difference.

my boss is an electrical enginer and he told me that aluminum will not work as well as magnetic metal for shielding audio noise. He said the Faraday spray is the way to go. He said old screen doors metal mesh would work but modern day screen doors use aluminum or plastic mesh. But sheet metal for heating air ducts would also work well.

my diy shielding job consisted of this: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/shielding/shield3.php

i used thick aluminum foil for the shielding, the recommended spray adhesive, and some stuff from radio shack for the star grounding. it took a couple of hours and i did'nt notice any improvement after i finished.
i shielded a strat using that very website as reference. i had a perfectly sealed cavity and ground continuity confirmed with an ohm-meter and it still didnt do shit. that bitch still hums like mad. the moral of the story: single-coil pickups suck.

i did the same thing greg, cavity completely sealed. the moral of the story is some times good tone has a down side. single coils definately don't suck.

If your using an amp/fx that has tons of compression, then the hum will be awful even with a humbucker pup, thus the value of the gate.

i know they dont suck. i actually like single-coils. i just hate their buzz. but unfortunately ive never heard a really nice hum-cancelling single-coil that can rival the tonal quality of a true single that hums its ass off.
