ok, I've been thinking about making some of those mineral wool panels for awhile now. does anyone know what would be the acoustic difference in using 4" thick and 2" thick panels? would the thicker panels trap more bass or be better for sound isolation? i was planning to treat the walls around my monitors, make some bass traps, and maybe make a makeshift vocal booth.

oh and is 8# pcf = 8 lbs. per cubic feet? if that is correct, a 2" x 2' x 4' panel would be about 1.34 lbs. and a 4" x 2' x 4' panel would be about 2.67 lbs. i can't put a bunch of screws in the wall here. any ideas on what I could use "cheaply" to hang the panels without causing damage? i wonder if a couple of those plastic head thumb tacks, per panel, would work.

how much was the shipping cost through SPI? i took a look at the panels at insulation world. they are only $29 for a pack of 6 panels, 2' x 4' which come in 2", 3", or 4" thick but the shipping cost for one pack is $60! that's not very cost effective for me.

Got Johns Manville 817 2" in Montreal (Quebec - Canada) from Dispro 514-354-5251 for 4.79$ CAN /sq ft (i think the price is a bit high but the only place i could find it)

here's a bump.

i just got some mineral wool from SPI in Benicia, CA. they were very helpful and got me a decent price i think. $.60/sqft for 4lb density 2"x2'x4' panels, and $1.30/sqft for 6lb density 4"x2'x4' panels (ill be using these for bass traps). they sell the 4lb 2" in bundles of 8 sheets (i bought 2) and the 6lb 4" in bundles of 4 (bought 2 of these also). unfortunately they didnt have them in stock at the time, but they put in an order for me and i'll be going to pick em up when they arrive.

:D

They've got a bunch of locations scattered across Maryland and Virginia. They were helpful, cheerful, and highly professional -- and that did not change when I told them I only wanted two packages of material.
I just called these folks today and they were very polite and helpful over the phone. I'm going there tommorow. The prices are great. I'm going with the 8# rockwool, only 50 cents a square foot!!

i am going to be searching a place here in Cincinnati to see what i can find for this stuff and what my prices will be... right now i don't need much for this little closet i use for a studio but i think a pair of bass traps should help me out a lot.
so its going to be a matter of getting money and time to search for it seems like i never have both at the same time

i called spi and they gave me a pretty decent quote on some rockwool. more impressive though, they referred me to a local insulation distributor so that i could avoid shipping costs. the local company also has lower prices. Shook and Fletcher in mobile alabama. all 8# density, 4" is $0.79 psf, 2" is $0.41 psf.

Adding one, for the Vermont area (all 4 of us).

In Williston, Holman Supply 863-0355 they are a commercial supplier for Johns Manville and sell the 814, in stock when i called today. The 6 pcf was 1.73/square foot.

Daav

just thought id bump this thread and thank everyone that has kept bumping it. definitely useful information.

In St. Louis, give me a holler.

As for duct board, you just have to be careful. As was stated, the inside usually also has some kind of facing on it. even the stuff that appears not to has a spray on coating. It has to or the dirt in the air would cake up horribly on raw fiberglass. It's so thin that it likely does very little to anything but the extreme HF's. Just be aware.

You have made me a happy camper! I live in woodbridge. Going to the Manassas location after work today.

I never knew rigid fiberglass was soo cheap! I'm ordering mine tomorrow! Woot Woot!

Hello there, i've searched the whole thread, maybe i am just dumb and cant see it, but I'm on Long Island (NY) are there any Fiberglass dealers in this area?

This website ATS Acoustics sells rigid fiberglass board online (not Owens Corning brand, but equivalent). They ship to the US via FedEx which makes it easy.

I am affiliated with the site. I hope this post is helpful to those of you looking for an easier way to get the materials you need.

At $12 per panel, assuming they are 2'x4'(8 sq ft)thats 1.50 per sq. ft. Seems reasonable. At $69 for six, also sounds reasonable. Who is the manucacturer and do you have lab test absorption coeffiecient data? What density is the fiberglass. I didn't see any manufacturing specs. Not even the size of panel.
Only 2" thick. Thanks. Sounds like a solution to many peoples difficulty of finding this stuff. I too have had a problem finding 703 but haven't actively pursued it. If this stuff proves to be equal to 703, I'd be willing to bet they will recieve my business ;) :D
