I just can't bring myself to worship musical idols or even acknowledge greatness. It's a slippery slope. They don't inspire me to get better. They just make me LOL @ their sheer pomposity or defiantly reject principles like practice and rudiments, which I know are beneficial, but don't do anyway. I wacthed those videos. Rimshot's was just a wankfest showoff session, the others simply don't compute. :(

You comin' to westfest this year? I'll show you how I incorporated Gadd's triplets into a cool little fill if you'll give me some drum tuning tips. And by "tips", I mean teach me how to tune a fucking drum properly.

Lol. I don't know. I might be going. I gotta check with midget Joe. I think I'm banned from wikieup. :D

They can't ban you from Wikieup. Let me know if you want me to finesse Joe for you.

I'll let you know as it gets closer. I can't commit right now anyway.

I pissed off Joe real bad a while back, and he's a fucking midget, so I know he's holding that grudge tight to his 26" chest.

Well, not to belabor a joke, but Joe's bigger than that.

I think he'll overlook his personal drama so that we can all enjoy the presence of your company.

And by "all", I mean Crazy Wikieup Lady, who still has a hard-on for you.

I'd knock the bottom out of that shit.

Wheelemo said he'd show, so that alone might be worth it right there.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two westfests. #2 was a non-stop lol-fest. We need a big turnout - like everyone from #1 and #2 plus some n00bs.

I don't really care if a drummer is a basic pounder or a master of polyrhythmic dexterity. I dig Billy Cobham's Mahavishnu drumming, I like Phil Taylor's early Motorhead drumming. One sounded like he had 3 brains, 5 legs and 8 arms, one sounded like he'd only been playing for 4 weeks. Both were integral to their respective bands' music.
I find that the song is where it's at. But I find that when I do hear certain drummers on more than a few songs/albums, a certain pattern emerges and I find that I can dig that drummer or not as the case may be. I've never particularly been thrilled by Steve Gadd but I think he's a good drummer.
I find that I hear the drummer's (and everyone elses' for that matter) contribution once I'm into a song rather than think "Oh, that's such and such, I must check out that song". But admiration for someone's skills isn't worship. It's just unbridled enthusiasm. A very human thing, we like to share some of that which we like.

I like Phil Taylor's early Motorhead drumming. .

Lol. That's so funny. I was gonna mention him, but thought someone might get offended. Philthy Animal is cool, and thankfully you'll never see him gaying it up in some youtube clinic vid.

I think drummers are generally underrated as a species. It kind of irritates me though I'm not a drummer. If I was going to form a band, a drummer would be my first port of call. Even before the sitar player. :D. Preferably one that could Whamsock a la Philthy animal and polyrhythm a la Tony Williams, if you know what I mean.
By the way, "harpy breathday" Pope Gregory ! May all your drumskins be tuned to your specifications and delight. ;)

Lol. Thanks, but it aint my birthday yet. You're living in the future. :D

I enjoy being a drummer, and it is probably my favorite instrument, but it doesn't define me. I'm equally at home on guitar or bass, and for the style of music I listen to and play, I can hold my own on any of the three instruments in a band or on recordings. And really, I'm probably a better bassist than anything. Bass is so unbelievably boring though. That might be one reason I don't get off one anyone's virtuosity. I'm like yeah whatever, I'm as good as I need to be for what I play and being overly fancy doesn't belong in my kind of stuff. I'm simply not easily impressed. And that's not cuz I think i'm better, it's just cuz I don't relate. I tend to like musicians that play in bands that I like. I like the music, not necessarily the guys that make it. I love Keith Moon because I love The Who. He was their drummer and I love his little piece of their sound. I don't wanna play like him and don't really take any influence from his style, but I like him. If someone like Steve Gadd had ever played as part of a band I like, or made music that I find worth listening to, I might give him the respect that people think he deserves.

We tend to do that in England ! :D
It's a good one, trying to explain to my kids how the times are different in various parts of the world.
