stereo recording

Ok I think I see the problem. I am using my computer to try to record various sources to wave files in order to burn CD's from them. Although I am using stereo cassette player into the line in jack of my sound card and have specified a stereo recording in CoolEdit Pro, my soundblaster mixer control only seems to have a mono record level control. ie only one slider and no balance controls. Is there a mixer control available that allows stereo recording via the line in socket.
 
Is the connector jack that goes to the soundcard a stereo jack? Even the Windows
volume control applet has a pan control.
I've never seen any Soundblaster stuff that had less functionality than the Windows stuff on which it's based. Are the Cool Edit tracks set up for mono or stereo tracks?

Yes the line input jack is a stereo jack. There is no pan control on my record level control. Also the soundblaster installation seems to have deleted the windows mixer controls so I have no access to them. And yes I have selected stereo recording in ooledit pro,

I see your still having problems with this...and I see you're still stuck thinking it's the mixer control.

Listen, many of us use soundblasters. I currently use a Creative/Ensoniq Audio PCI (same mixer as the PCI128), and have used the Soundblaster PCI128, Soundblaster 16, and for a short time the Soundblaster Live!

There is nothing special in regards to setting up any of these cards for recording stereo. The line in plug is stereo, and that's all there is to it. There is on occasion a balance control for the Recording Line In slider...but you'd probably never use it.

If you've already tried reinstalling the drivers....then the issue is most likely with CoolEdit. Sometimes it's easy to miss something in these multitracking software packages....the learning curve is a bit steep.

The only alternative is that your soundcard is busted...but since you can monitor the source in stereo, it's probably software.

Also, verify that you're really plugged into the Line In and not the Mic In...they're not clearly labeled. If you're plugged into the Mic In port, you'll hear the sound out of both speakers, but it is a mono source so all of your recordings will be mono.

Ok. What I've done now is to produce a stereo input that has just 2 signals. one panned hard right and one panned hard left. I have recorded this using Cooledit and I am getting a stereo recording...BUT the left hand channel is Ok and the right hand channel is very, very muffled.

Hmmm...

Question: can you monitor the sound in stereo? That is, when you hit play on the source, can you hear both channel via your soundcard's line out?

Anyway, it kinda sounds like your soundcard might be busted. I had an SB PCI128 puke on me and a number of people have had soundblasters die....though it is rare.

Do you have access to another soundcard? These soundblasters, BTW, only run around $20-30.

Yes I can monitor in stereo perfectly ok. Its just the recording that is the problem. It even does it ( muffled right hand channel )recording from the CD drive - which doesn't go via the line-in input socket.

Welp, if you're certain that you're using your software correctly, then I'd suggest trying another soundcard. Sometimes you can spend ages denying that your soundcard is busted...I've done it before :)

I'd try to install your software on a friend's computer and see what happens. If you can record just fine, then the chances are even greater that your soundcard is actually broken.

Or just replace the soundcard. You can get an AudioPCI or a PCI128 at places like Staples for about $30. Online they run around $20. Not the best cards, but very far from the worst. Like I said, I use them and am happy enough.

Be certain that you're setup right in cooledit and with your connection to the source before you go blowing any money though!
