I record 2 tracks of identical guitar. I pan them medium left and right, but sometimes I have a phasing problem with the two. They kinda phase in and out a little and it's very obvious. Is this a type of phase cancellation or something? How do I fix it?

Thanks for the reply...

I've had that same problem, when I dupe one track then paste the copy it seems to help. Also, hard left and hard right.

I record 2 seperate guitar tracks, but playing the same thing, with a little difference in tone, and panning them between 2 and 4 o'clock. For me, this sounds better than duplicating one track and panning hard right and left. IMO.

Hopefully I can find a solution to the phasing/panning problems...

If they are two totally different tracks recorded on separate passes they should not phase. Only identical tracks should phase. I'd try shifting the mike slightly on the second pass but I can't figure out why they would phase if you didn't.

If you are playing 2 tracks but the same part, you will get a phase-flange, chorus-delay effect but this is a good thing and should add fullness and depth to your track. It is a natural thing.
If you don't like the sound, try to delay one of the tracks a bit more (or less) This should help.

But if you are lossing signal in a drastic way,as in phase cancelation then that seems hard to understand as John said.

Actually what I am doing is running through the POD with both parts and just tweaking one a bit. Like moving the pickup switch 1 notch or using a different cab preset. It's not a dramatic phasing problem, just every once in a while I can hear them phase for a second, then it'll be fine for awhile, then they will do it again. (it sounds like one cuts out for just a second. But when I play just one of them back, they sound fine. They don't do it on all my songs, just a couple. You can tell if your sitting between the speakers, and you can really tell if your using headphones...

Sure it's not just the way you played the track. I've had similiar things happen when I double guitar parts, panned left and right. I can never play exactly the same, and with extreme panning, the slightest change of playing/dynamics can stick out and 'sound' like a dropout, when it really isn't. Well it is, but it was my fault!

Sounds to me like you are just playing real tight - nothing wrong with that ;)

cheers
