okay, do i need a matched stereo pair to stereo mic the drum set... or are really any two of the same kind of mics going to probably be okay? also, where can i get the best price on oktava mk012's? and is guitar center really phasing them out?

They don't have to be matched pairs. It's just easier to deal with if they are.

Especially not if you do MS Miking (MS, or Middle-Sides, is a Stereo miking technique that utilises one Fig 8 pattern mic and one cardioid. The signal from the fig 8 mic is split in two (using a splitter cable) with one signal having it's polarity reversed (this can be done by using the Polarity Reverse control on your pre-amp or desk). You then use panning to widen or narrow the stereo picture, with the cardioid filling in the middle. Since the two signals from the Fig 8 mic are "Out of phase" they will disappear when summed to mono, leaving only the signal from the cardioid mic.)

Ive seen n heard a drum kit ghetto miked a few times (2 TOTALLY different condensers overhead) and it sounded decent enuff.......

okay, and it's generally accepted the mk012's are the best cheapish overheads? or would it be better to save for like sm81's or akg 451's?

also, how do the ecm8000s compare? or are the mk012's waay better?

As I've just mentioned in another thread, there's rumors flying around that Guitar Center is moving these at $50 apiece on Labor Day. Might be worth checking out.
