stereo mic, or matched pair?

i was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the use of a stereo mic in place of a matched pair in x/y configuration...

it is time to upgrade my overheads and the nt-4 has been on my mind.. (that, or probably a matched pair of peluso's)

besides the benefits of the individual mics being used in non-stereo sttuations, any advantage either way..?

Well, stereo mics are always locked into the proper pattern and phase relationship. That is a nice advantage. However, two matched mics allows you the opportunity to change that relationship (spacing, distance etc...) which is also a nice advantage. Personally, I would go with the two seperate mics and wait to get an actual stereo mic until your mic locker is built up nicely. Not to mention that I would gravitate towards the Peluso's before I went with a Rode.
 
I tried a Blumlein pair with two AKG 414's the other day and that was ACE! very 'cultured' open sound, I was miking up an upright piano and it just sang!

I also tried an ORTF with very similar results but nit quite as nice.

experience

I have to second that -- choose a pair of matched Peluso's over the Rhode stereo mic. Then study up on stereo miking techniques and start experimenting. Rez
