Stereo does not necessarily = 'better than mono'.

The only time you want to RECORD in stereo, is if there is different signals going into the left and right channels.

They may only be slightly different, but in a good way.

Like Bjork.

..

ok ok.

say, for example, that i am recording a song and i record like 5 or 6 tracks, all in mono. When i go to mix them and I pan each track differently, say some to the left and some to the right, is this then making a stereo track as a whole?

In ohter words, when i pan each of the tracks to R and L, then mix it down, the mixdown will be stereo right? If this is the case, I am definately going to record in mono, saving file space. Thanks for the tips guys. Do you guys record almost everthing in mono? vocals? guitar?

mino-

You got it- you can record a hundred mono tracks- pan em around while your mixing- when you mix down you'll mixdown a 2 track stereo file. I dont record as much as alot of the other people around here (mainly just my band or some buddies every once in a while) but i never record stereo tracks.

The only thing I do usually record that could be considered a stereo source is drum overheads, but i like the ability to eq and effect the left and right seperately so instead of one stereo track, I'll record 2 mono tracks. SO there is even reasons to record stereo sources as mono tracks. there really are no rules- just better / worse ways of doing things.

Hope that helps- happy recording.
