I am trying to get my sounds to jump out of the speakers like you hear on the Neptune mixes or ontimbos work. How are they getting their desired effect ....any help appreciated !! thx alot

The only real trick is to record good sources then mix and master it well.

I'm not familiar with those particular examples, but psychoacoutic effects are usually accomplished through phasing and very short delays.

ive got a plug in by waves called the S1 stereo spatial enhancer.

www.waves.com

it works.

also ik multimedia's T-racks has a tube compressor with a spatial width enhancer.

that works too.

there a times when these "physics efx" can geek your mix so you gotta be sparing with them in most cases though, these are software based mastering plug ins.

peace.

thx alot ! I will try definately try these vst plugs....i also know there are some hardware devices for example there is the roland dimension d which is supposed to bring the wideness ..but i will start with these plugs thx !

If you're using a DAW try making a copy of one of the tracks to another track and then move the copied track a few samples at a time. What this is doing is simulating the effect of sound reaching your ear at different time intervals which is how we perceive dimension.

I believe that if you delay something around 8 microseconds it should sound like it's coming from behind your head.

I had a guy in the studio once who was playing around with a phase effect in front of the speakers and I kept looking behind me to see where the sound was coming from thinking another member of the band was screwing around.

I agree that you shouldn't use much of something like this, if your mix doesn't stand up when you switch to mono you have problems.
