does it make any difference if you apply master stereo/widening/spatial/whatever effects before or after final compression?
 
Not really but stereo enhancement effects should be used as little as possible. They are nice for background pads and effects but if used on an entire mix they can really take the punch out of a recording.

This applies to most mainstream music. If you are doing weird stuff then anything goes.
