I dont get what a stereo track (with 2 inputs on it) is...what is it used for...why would you want to different things on one track because you lose individual control right....i feel dumb asking this but stereo tracks dont make sense to me...

Some people think it is easier to deal with drum overheads and keyboards as a stereo track. I use them for submixes.

thank you...but that doesnt explain what stereo and mono actually means....can i record just one track on it or do i nee to have to inputs?

The 1/8 jack on the PC is most likely a stereo input. It is both left and right in the same jack. You were using the wrong adapter. If you go to Radio shack and ask for a 'Y' cable, they will give you the wrong cable. You need a stereo splitter cable, not a 'Y' cable.
A 'Y' cable takes one stereo signal and splits it into two stereo signals.
A stereo splitter cable takes one stereo signal and splits it into a left and a right.

stereo/mono

what recording prgram are you using?
If you want a mono channel but it gives you stereo by default, you just have to change the track properties when creating the track.

As mentioned by farview, stereo tracks are usually used for things like drum overheads, where any signal processing (eq, compression) is going to be exactly the same for the two channels. It's just easier when mixing.

And I hope I'm not getting too basic here, but you asked what stereo and mono means.
A stereo track is two channels of audio, one on the left, one on the right (usually no extra panning is allowed or needed).
Mono is one channel that plays down the center or can panned left or right to any degree.

I record acoustic guitar in stereo because it just sounds better. Not a particularly technical answer but that's the crux of it. Some things just sound better recorded in stereo.

IM not talking about on a program....or what instrument to do it on....im askig abou stereo on a behringer mixer...i want to record more than four mono tracks...but only have four mono and four stereo...can i record a mono track on a stereo track?

Use a Y cable to split across. Or use the stereo track as 2 mono tracks (if you can)

Umm can't you just pan the stereo channel to the left or right on the mixer? I'm not sure why your getting all mad ethier. Your question didn't mention the mixer in the beginning :/. IMO it seemed like you got mad neway.
