I have a cheap sound card that works fine(HP) I plug directly from my keyboard or guitar effects into it. It sounds fine but what I keep hearing is that I NEED a mixer/preamp, what for? Is there anything else you can think that I might need? No vocals just instruments.

If it sounds fine to you, u dont need one....and if you are only using keyboards and going thru effects boxes, you probably dont need a preamp/mixer.....
