anyone wanna chime in here. i was reading about it on john vestmans site. massive, masteringhouse, you guys have any thoughts on this?

this is where you basically create sub mixes, ie, stereo drums, stereo bass, stereo instruments, vox, ext... but leave them true to your stereo mix.. sounds cool... seems like it would give the ME ultimate control.

You're one or two days late on this question, forever. ;) Check out the current thread in this forum called "Mastering one track at a time" where this is in fact the current discussion. :)

lol, didnt even look at that thread cuz so many people think mixing and mastering are the same thing.. haha

Defo a good idea stem mastering in moi opinion.

If your a novice and have a sh!tty room....very beneficial...but will cost more $$$ then just mastering a stereo version to..

so, you would charge the same for stem mastering?

It depends on the material, if it's a good well-balanced mix, then it would cost more to do stems (and there wouldn't be any advantage anyway). If it's an unbalanced mix that I could fix more quickly via stems it would cost less.

I would need to hear the mixes to give a definitive answer.

In other words, I think what Tom is saying is that it takes longer to fix a crappy stereo mixdown than to create a good new mixdown from stems; therefore when looking at hourly labor cost, it's cheaper to create a new mix from the stems in those cases.

Conversely, if the stereo mixdown is in pretty good shape and just needs the ol' Blue Coral and pinstriping treatment, then there is no need to even go to the stems.

And this adds *what* to this five-year-old thread...?

:D

What I wanna' know...stem mastering....is it mixing or is it mastering?
So what forum should this thread be in? :)

Interscope, Epic, Capitol, Jive Records - and no client list...? No *nothing*...? No engineer's name...?

Call me suspicious... Or at least, confused.

Ha. Yeah, they're still working on their site I guess. They did some great work for me and asked me to tell my friends, so just giving a shout out.

Didn't realize the thread was old news, sry!
