Stealth Recording Classical String

Later this Spring we plan to attend the World Cello Congress, a 7-day international extravaganza of performances and master classes. Many of the world's most celebrated cellists will be there: Starker, Ma, Greenhouse, but to name three. The event is held once every four years, tho' rumored this may be the last.

Unfortunately, we have been informed that taping of any session is verboten. We would like to record the masterclasses (music and commentary) and concerts for ourselves with at least some level of quality. We already own an MD recorder and pr of 'premium' subcardiod condenser mics (Sound Professionals/capsules can be changed) which we use for our practice sessions - don't know if any of this gear might be helpful. It seems so much of the stealth stuff out there (binaural) is set for high SPL material, and further, in this setting I can't look geeky or rigged... Mono recording may suffice, stereo imaging would be much better.

I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts you might have - equipment, etc. Preferably, I will stick with MD, but I'm open to all/any suggestions. Also of consideration - as the event only lasts a week, are there options to consider to rent/borrow appropriate equipment rather than purchase?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Forgive me if this sounds too conservative, but ...
If the folks who are putting on this event do not want it recorded, maybe you shouldn't record it at all ... even if it's just for yourself.
If you're determined to record it anyway, check out what other bootleggers do. I'm sure there's some web sites out there.

Ordinarily I would quite agree - without exception I have always respected the rules. In this particular case, some of the 'greats' will be giving master classes on cello technique. It is invaluable to be able to review this material later, as I work toward improving my own playing. That is the sole purpose of the recording - to be able to go back and work thru the material on my own. I would not compete with others with recording or video rights who would then sell the material - it just will not be available.
As to your suggestion for bootlegger's sites, I'd appreciate any direction or site recommendations. Thanks for your honest reply.

Try 2 cardioid mics with a 110 gegree angle between them,
7 inchs between the capsules. This is referred as an ORTF configuration.

If you want to invest more then add to that 2 omni mics at a straight line to each side of the cardioid a couple of inchs away.

Bootlegger was a strong term. Sorry.
If you're participating in it, you should be allowed to have a record of it. I can understand their concerns, though.
Only thing I can think of are PZM mics. They're not small, but you could tape them to the floor, wall or under your chair and maybe get away with it. It would be tough to do it in stereo though.
