Hi guys, so i have this problem.

When recording I can hear a decently loud static, as if the mic is picking up noise from my computer's fan or something. However, after much time spent adjusting knobs and failing to find a good filter to cancel it out, I finally decided to disconnect my mic and check if it would still pick up the noise. It did, the mic wasn't even plugged in and recordings were still somehow imprinted with static. It isn't an incredibly loud static, but just loud enough to want to do something about it.

Any ideas?

What is your sound chain? Could be the audio interface, the USB cable ....

I have an XML mic going into a mixer, and then the mixer into my sound card. My sound card isn't anywhere near the greatest, do you think that could be it?

Sounds like a digital earth loop problem again. Is it a lap top or a desk top computer? If it's a lap top does the noise go away when you run on batteries?

Alan.

Then it just may be your sound card. You shouldn't use it.

What are you using as a sound card? is it the inbuilt one that came with it or something else?

Get an audio interface! USB or Firewire. Soundcards in desktops are POS.

my new guitar, with it's nylon scratch plate, was creating static charges that would pop...

my luthier said 'use clothes dryer soft-sheets'.......

which i did, and the problem disappeared.
!

Ya I have a usb audio interface coming in the mail within the next few hours, I'll let you guys know if it fixes the static.
