hey yall..just got a pair of bx8 and im loving them..exept my left one is giving out static which is pissing me off..like nothign is even playingl..and its giving off this..almost rhythmic static beat..like a fast heart monitor only static not beep..its not TOO loud..but i dont think it should be there..and its only the left one....theres no electronics next to it exept for my monitor...and i just cant figure it out..the way i got it set up is i got a 1/4" Y cable..and a 1/4" to 1/8" inch converter which plugs into my soundcard

is this a hardware problem or a cable problem or what? any ideas?

thanks

umm ok...i just unpluged the teh cable from the monitor..and its still making the noise..if i turn up the volume on the monitor the static goes up..what the fuck..i really dont feel like shipping these back...

Try moving the monitor around and see if it still makes the sound. Carry it to another room and plug it in, if it still makes the sound then there's very likely something wrong with it. Send it back, it's your money and you have the right to have your purchase work properly.

They should be dead silent without a signal.

Ditto Sonic Albert on swapping positioning of the speakers - just switch positions of the monitor itself and leave everything else the same. Does the static follow the monitor or stay with the location?

If it stays with the location and there is no cable input, try swapping out the power cables to see if that's the problem. Sometimes a power cable looks fine but is not. If no change, test the outlet for polarity and ground. If the monitors are feeding from the same outlet, make sure it is wired well and there are no stray ends. If that's OK, then find another location.

Otherwise, it's a call to the company and a return authorization number. But whatever you do, don't put up with it.

i agree, if they want to build crap and not bother to thouroughly QC check the stuff...they deserve to get it sent back. but i wouldn't give 'em too many chances either. ymmv...

this is another issue that makes me wonder about actives too, or at least is a downside to actives to be considered. a few posts recently about actives buzzing and humming.

the theory of Bi-Amp is good, but do the Manufacturers also get a nice profit boost by slapping in a "mystery" amplifier/electronics...what exactly are they putting inside the monitors??

how much is posted about the amps? and how do they compare to standalone power amps?
i'd like to know.

i think bleyrad's Wharf and York post was the only one I know that opened up a couple and looked inside. and that was active amp to active amp. comparison...great post imo.

I don't think that's entirely fair, as the actives we are talking about in this thread (and most on this site) are budget monitors. These are the monitors where the manufacturer cut corners to bring the retail price as low as possible. I don't think it is entirely fair to judge active monitors as a group by the lowest common denominator.

In my studio I have a pair of Mackie HR824's and KRK V4's and have not had trouble with either.

hmm i just let it sit over night and it stopped...not sure why considering i didnt do anything to them..maybe they just needed to be broken in..i dunno..anyways thanks for the help yall..

yeah, cut corners and slap on a "Pro Studio" sticker.

i was just thinking there isn't much info on the internal amps. you would think people would be picking them apart like everything else....
i mean they dissect the Alesis amps vs the Bryston's...but on active monitors you never hear about what chip or mosfet is being used, or who makes the amp? what kind of heatsinks?? all of a sudden its amplifiers don't matter?

Technically, I don't think anyone would argue , if done right, the matched amps and speakers and Bi-Amped and Active crossovers win per the design/physics guys. Its just technically the way to go, being active. and they have all the little switches on the back to Eq the monitor. impedance matching etc..

but i was just stating there's a few pro's to the Passive monitor method too...
and internal amps going out is one of them. and it seems recently there's a few threads about noises and buzzes and cap's needing replaced in "certain" actives.

Side by Side, I probably couldn't tell which one was active or not.

Yorkville YSM1P for example, probably the best rated/reviewed budget active monitor per this forum and others.

They have the full schematics and part's available online ...a LM3886 for amplifier guts, fuses a Full parts list. Very nice on this side of things too.

This is a very common amp and wouldn't be surprised if it's inside many different brand of active monitors.
