Static in protools

My Yamaha synth is causing major static in ProTools 8. The keyboard is connected to the computer through USB MIDI. I'm not sure if it's the synth or the system configuration. I am not new to any of this, but I know how sensitive Protools set-ups can be. I am running a PC system with 2 xeon duel core 3.73Ghz processors, 4GBs of memory, and windows 7. I think it's the keyboard but I not sure. I could use some advise on this please.
 
What makes you think it's the synth?

If it's connected via usb and sending midi then it's unlikely to be creating any static; Midi is just digital instructions sent to another instrument.
Does this static happen when you're recording, playing back, or both.
Can you make an mp3/wav of the static or does it not commit to bounced audio?

What interface are you using for playback? Drivers up to date?
 
Not only does it happen during recording and playback, it also happens when you are just playing when the system is idle as long as Protools is open. The interface is a M-Audio Project mix I/O control surface. The static is recorded with the rest of the signals. All current drivers and firmware. It happen with analog keyboard signal input also.

Is this a new thing? Did the system work beforehand?
Is the interface new to you? Has it ever worked as it should?

Do you have another computer to test it out with?
Assuming the alesis is USB, try a different port. If it's plugged into the front, try the back (and vice versa).
Try a different usb cable and try turning off the monitors and listening on headphones.

All these things rule something out. Juggle as many things about as you can.
 
I know this is a few weeks old, but if its happening this may help. Do you have any demo or improperly authorized plugins? If so, many of them emit the static sound so you can't do anything with the demo of that plug. IK Multimedia (T-Racks, Sampltiude, amplitude, etc....) are notorious for this method of anti-piracy.
