I posted this in "CakeWalk" without much response so I'll try it here. The issue is roughly what softsynth to use if not GigaSampler. I'd also add that I tried MIDI some years ago while two sons were in college-- ie, insufficient cash. Anyhow, I made a miserable attempt with an old Kawai K1 with sounds so horrible that the effort was a COMPLETE flop. So I'm somewhat claustrophobic on this issue. If you guys can help me get over this issue I swear that I'll be forever grateful. BTW, sons have done well and my "fixed income" lets me do any music I can handle.

I have been getting a DAW together for a while. It took longer than I expected, longer than I wanted it to, with some mistakes and several things I'd now do differently. However, out here in the country learning comes hard. For now, I'm satisfied with the specs: Athlon 1.4G,512, couple of SCSI's,Win2K,SB Live Plat.,Delta 1010,Sonar XL, DaviSound TB-3, 2xC1's.

Now to the point: I had intended using GigaStudio but there seem to be conflicts between that and the W2K. My question to guys here, is what sound sets would you recommend for me to start with? I'll be inputting MIDI with a keyboard controller [which has no sounds]. So please ask yourself this question: Given a mute DAW and you hit the middle C on the keyboard, where [to whence?] would you direct this command? To the extent that it effects your answer, my requirements are simple [not to be confused with easy]: jazz rhythm-- piano, acoustic bass, amped acoustic guitar, drums.

Some have suggested a second computer for GigaStudio and this is probably good advice. At this point, I'm somewhat frazzled from with getting machinery together without any music so if there's any way to delay that thread I'd sure prefer it.

All help greatly appreciate.

You can utilise the sounds from your sblive to start working with.
There are at least three midi options here, two different on board groups and the third option would be your outboard sounds. Check out sound fonts. Demo the live synth pro at cakewalk if you can, it is cool. Any & all soft synths would be right up your alley - check out the dxi section @ CW etc.,. I got giga LE and have been dissappointed - didn't work on my 98 machine and I know they are not compatible with XP just yet. Start looking into using wave loops and samples, this is a fun arena too . . .fruity loops is a ton a fun, try the free demo.
