Hey,

Just before I start I should tell you I have NO previous experience, and I'm finding all of this a bit daunting...but I don't wanna let anything stand in my way.

Basically, I wanna get started recording some beats...on a hip-hop, rap kinda vibe. I want to be able to sample as well. I also want to be able to record vocals. And I want all the basic sounds like drums, piano, guitar etc. Erm, I realise I may well be sounding pretty stupid right now...but I gotta ask to find out!

Also, maybe some kind of key-board to create, expirement with and record melodies etc, and sumthing that I can use to make sound effects (maybe there is something like an effects key-board type thingy- excuse my "techincal jargon" lol).

Also, I imagine I will need something to mould/mix this all into a song at the end.

My budget is £1000 pounds and down. I don't even know if this is possible with that budget.

Oh, and I wanna do it all at home, preferably without a computer. Maybe something stand-alone.

Please feel free to tell me if I am being foolish here lol, and please do your best to help me.

Thanks

ok Hung....she bang, she bang

Perhaps a high end keyboard like the Korg Tritton
or another keyboard that has all instruments and a built in sequencer.
Then perhaps a digital standalone recorder to do your mixin

thanks man

Appreciated. Can anyone else give me some more help. A bit more detail, some names and prices maybe. thanks:)

Hail Great Scribe in the UK:

Prices might be a bit tough to determine as things are slightly different here in the Colonies.

However, here are a few ideas with your USD value around 2 K in my guesstimate:

Boss 770 drum machine -- 400 presets and lots of bells and whistles and if you have the time and patience, you can program your drum sequences and wail away.

To start out, you don't need a high priced mic. Check the microphone forum and see what's what.

Keys: well, the Triton is a great board but maybe you can get by with less to start out. I'd check out a vendor in the UK and see what they have to offer and that will give you a chance to hear and touch and price. Yamaha makes many keyboards, as well as Korg.

For around 1k you can get a Yamaha digital box or several others; best thing to do is try to SEE them and decide how tough is the learning curve. The newer SIAB's [studio in a box] that run around a thousand USD or so, are pretty neat and are good for starting out. Get one with the CD burner on board.

Well, get out there Scribe and have fun.

Green Hornet:p :D

thanks a lot

I really appreciate that help..I'm looking into a KorgD1200mkII, seems like the shit!

I'm a big hip hop fan. There's a lot of options you have depending on the style of hip hop you choose to put out there, but basically... Since you don't want to use a computer,

get an Akai MPC (60, 3000, or 2000xl) loaded, with the onboard fx & multiple outs
-the MPC has been used by artists from Rza to DJ Quik, from Dr Dre to DJ Premier. Its a great machine. Its a sequencer/drum machine and sampler. It has midi ins/outs for controlling modules or communicating with other machines.

also, pick up a turntable. Just a basic one unless your doing some scratching. In that case pick up one with direct drive.

finally get something to record on. there are a bunch of options out there, but pick something thats basic, and has an sound editor if possible. But my advice, would be to get a Roland vs 880.
Its pretty staright forward, and if you get the EX version you'll have an onboard cd burner.

For a Mic get a Shure SM 57 and call it a day. Its a good all around mic. Ask anyone. Its good for instruments and vocals. Even a SM 58 would be good starting out.

hope this helps. If you want to record via computer it'd probably be cheaper, plus easier to manage your recordings. But whatever floats your boat. Good Luck

SCRIBE,
If I had a 1000 pound(2000 us dollar ) I woulg get this:

1)Digital recorder-Korg D1200
2)either an Akai MPC OR a Korg Triton-they can both sequence and samplethough the mpc doesn't have any internal sounds you must load your own.The Triton has internal sounds seeing as its a keyboard;).

Mic-I hear nothing but good about the Studio Projects B1 condenser mic.It costs less then 100 us dollars. Its a condenser mic so make sure your recorder has phantom power or it will not work.

With just those few tools you will have many, many, many creative nights just making hip hop.you don't need much at all.Hope this helps.

oops I forgot if you got the stuff used youll probably have enough to get a good set of used monitors(speakers).I would look into some used event tr5 or 8's/used M-audio sp5 or8's .
