The firepod is the soundcard....it hooks into the computer via Firewire. Everything happens externaly, inside the firepod. Records up to 24bit 96hz into a computer with a firewire port. No additional hardware is needed

yeah that setup is all you need, You really dont need the mixer, but for live recordings it will help. They were recording to a Mac G4 powerbook, that is what I use as well.

Snake,

So my AMD powered computer will still be loved?! I have 280 gigs of storage. 512 DDR and I am getting a 2.2 or better AMD processor. I am trying to acquire an entire Presonus package now. So I will let you know how it goes.

yeah as long as you have a firewire port you are good to go. You need to be running windows or mac os x. Specs on your computer are more than enough!

BTW, what bands are we talking about that you miss so much? :)

Haha! Its a line from a wilco song called heavy metal drummer. Give it a listen if you get a chance.

I don't see any need for a mixer. The firepod has the preamps, phantom power, Hi-Z inputs, inserts, monitor mixer, headphone out.... You can apply eq in the daw

Yeah, in a studio setting you dont need it, but if you are recording live, being able to subgroup tracks and send them as one might be helpful.

Yeah it sounds like thats what the guys did in your earlier post and we will probably end up doing the same. We are much more focused on the live aspects.

Ok, the Firepod it is. I'm getting a Firepod and for $500.00 brand new no less! I'm throwing a new processor in my computer an upgrading from a 512 to a Gig of DDR Ram as well. Let the games begin. Thanks for your help everyone.

Wow $500. Considering you're getting an 8 channel, 24/96, portable recording studio, that is an incredible deal

Yeah it's a sweet deal. You really helped me out. Thanks for that.

Is there any way to connect a Firepod and an actual mixer? Say you're playing live and want to have easy access to hardware slides for volume, etc. With only a firepod, you'd have to do all this via computer if I'm not mistaken.

Just something I was wondering about,
Thanks

The firepod has its own preamp gain, monitor mix & headphone volume controls.

But you could hook it up to an external mixer if you wanted

What about sound cards with this unit. What would you choose.

You don't need a soundcard. The Firepod is the soundcard

OK, sorry if this is dumb, but is there no other part of the process where a sound card will prove necessary? Thanks!

Hey,

I'll just confirm all you deciding to go with the firepod. I've owned one for a couple months. I pretty much decided that nothing would come close to it in terms of available channels/preamps/portability/etc. It was the best bang for the buck I could find. After having it in my "studio" for a while, my thoughts are most definately confirmed. This thing has worked flawlessly ever since I turned it on.

I used to have a delta44 card and I used a dmp-3 for pre's, both of which are highly praised in this forum. Though I liked that set-up, the firepod is noticeably better. I don't know if it's the quality of the pre-amps in the firepod over the dmp3, or the quality of the converters in the firepod over the delta44, but the firepod has much more presence, depth, clarity, and on and on. Basically, it just sounds better. The unit has a function that mixes the level of the playback signal and the headphone out signal, making tracking extremely easy - it's a very well thought out unit.

The software you get with it is good, and you eliminate the need for a mixer, outboard mic pre's, heaphone amp, and a tangle of cables behind your desk. Can you tell I love this thing?

Click here: http://www.feelslikefridaymusic.com/music.htm and listen to either "Something Better" or "The Way It Has To Be" (the way it has to be is probably a better recording) to the firepod in action. Compare to the other 3 songs below those 2 - they were done with the delta44/dmp3 set-up. See if you can hear the difference like I did.

Not really - the firepod acts as your soundcard. I know it seems wierd because it's not "part" of the computer, being an outboard unit, but it will control all of your normal computing sounds as well. Your computer will see it as a sound card just like it would a soundblaster or anything else.

You can have a different soundcard with it if you want - I've still got the stock soundcard in my computer just so I can listen to my mixes on my crappy computer speakers (I like to listen to my mixes on as many different speakers as possible), but it is not at all necessary, and can sometimes cause problems (easily fixed, though).
