Starting Out In A Confusing Field

Hi, im trying to figure out how i would start on the whole synth thing, i love the use of synths in most indie eg. the killers, the postal service and action action. Howver they all cost loads, and due to lack of money i cannot afford any i see. Are there any available for say £300, or is there a better way of geting into "the scene". I have heard that geting a midi controler keyboard + synth module is a gd way? Also i find loads of buttons confusing so if theres one with knobs that change the sound as you turn them, well that would be better!
Any help u can give will be greatly appreciated
