Starting my Home Studio...?

The issue with Dell and other home PC's is not raw power but compatibility. My only concern is that JonathanRay buy a computer that will work properly out of the box. This is why Mac's are good (and I have recommended some $500 Macs, by the way), and this is why custom built PC's are good.

If there is a cheap Dell that is 100% compatible with Digi hardware and software, then go for it, absolutely. But PC's are tricky that way. Which is why I recommended a custom built PC, since JonathanRay doesn't want to buy a used G4 Mac.

And as far as the system being worthless in 2-3 years, that's just simply not true. If it does what you want it do today, it will do the same thing in 2-3 years. I gave my old Mac 9500 with a G3 processor upgrade to my brother, and he's still using it with ProTools to record not only himself but other bands. You don't need a monster machine to do most recording and audio editing tasks. If you'd read the rest of this thread you would have seen that I am not pushing JonathanRay to get a major tricked out system, just a reliable one.

By worthless I only meant in terms of its financial value, not in terms of its functionality. PC's depreciate in value very quickly. That's one of the biggest benefits of going the mac route - it will hold its resale value much better than a comparable pc. And I completely agree a custom built audio pc would be much better than a cheap-ass dell. The problem is, you're going to pay a lot more for the custom pc (in general).

I should say that I think in very general terms, folks that lean towards macs and protools are of the "I don't want to have to tweak it crowd", whereas I fall more into the "I WANT to tweak it" crowd and I suppose I have a tendency to think, why wouldn't YOU want to tweak it too? - which maybe explains where I'm coming from :)
