I currently have:
A bunch of sm-57's and 58's.

Possible first purchases:
At4040, Studio Projects C1 or Similar large diaphram condensor mic for vox.
Pair of Oktava 012's or Studio Projects C4's for overheads/ acoustic etc.
D112 or Beta 52 kick.

I'm going to be mostly recording loud rock bands. Trying to keep it as simple as possible to start with (probably just 2 overheads, kick and snare on the drums). Any suggestions/ better alternatives?

I think you have the right idea. The mics you've listed are all solid price/performance choices. You should be able to record just about anything reasonably well with that locker.

If you should decide that you need your main LD mic to be a multipattern mic, I have an Audio Technica 4050 with shockmount for sale:)

I agree.....It looks like you have a good start

That looks like a pretty good mic locker.

I use very similar gear.

I have a ATM25 for Kick (in hindsight I would prefer the D112), SM57 for snare, PRO25L's for Toms, Rode NT5's or Oktava MK012's for overheads.

I also think the Studio Projects C3 is a great mic, and so is the C1. I have owned both, and sold off the C1 and kept the C3 (multi pattern)

I think with those mics, if you are struggling for a good sound, it might not be the mics... :)

Some other suggestions

Dynamic mics: Beyer M201 for snare, MD 421 good for toms and guitar cabs, sennheiser e609 is great for guitar cabs as well...

LDC's: Look for variaty - a solid does it all mic like the AT4040 or 4033, or the SP c1 (I have a couple), eventually add a tube LDC (NTK), also a multipattern like someone else suggested (M179 or a 4050)

A ribbon mic like the Nady or Apex versions...or if you've got the dough...get a Royer...they're really good for adding smoothness to electric guitars and vocals.
