Standard feature of the Revox B77 MkII, or is it a fault???

Thanks for the registration. This is my first post.

I've done a search here, but no luck on this issue.

I have acquired a good-physical-condition Revox B77 MkII which performs very well. However, it has a behaviour which I cannot find out about from the user manual. I'm hoping a B77 MkII owner may be able to confirm is this is intended, or if it's not.

These are the symptoms:

1. If a tape is already threaded up, ready to play, and then the power switch is turned on, the unit automatically enters the PLAY mode, playing the tape.

2. If no tape is threaded, and then it's turned on, the machine stays in the OFF mode.

Item 1 can also be achieved by gently placing a finger over the 'end of tape' sensor (the upper part) and then turning the power on - without a tape loaded - so the machine will think a tape is ready to go, and automatically enters PLAY mode.

Is Item 1 a standard feature of the B77 MkII, or is it confirming a fault...?

If the latter, any suggestions on what this problem may be caused by?

Please help!!!

Thanks in advance.

Thanks jpmorris for those two most relevant links. Seems these kinds of problems are not new.

I neglected to mention earlier: No remote controls are connected to my machine.

The Repair and Restoration forum issue concerns exactly my problem - a B77 (I or II?) starts up in PLAY when a tape is threaded ready to go, while the Studer-Revox forum issue is that a MkII starts into PLAY without any tape threaded. Whew. Perhaps this does indicate that neither of these actions is normal for a B77 - I or II...?

It's interesting. Perhaps the problem, if there is a problem, surrounds the end-of-tape circuitry on the transport board, or the circuitry following it which responds to it...?

I look forward to knowing your findings with your own MkII. If yours doesn't do the auto-PLAY action, with or without a tape, I'll presume that mine is faulty.

Lets get you off to a flying start, YES your machine is FAULTY. I had the same problem with a B77 and fix was very simple, i will have to go through my records to recall what it was. Off the top of my head i think it had something to do with the tape motion sensor.

Thanks Spooler for confirming the proper operation of the B77. Ah well, now I know I DO have a problem!

Any advice on how it was resolved with your machine would be very helpful to me. TIA.

Damn, I forgot about this. Just checked mine. It has problems with the spooling motors and the pinch solenoid not working correctly (which is why I stopped using it) but it certainly doesn't do what you're describing.
