Stage vocal mic

My wife would like a better stage/live sound vocal mic then what we have for her, which right now its a EV N/D767a. Would a AKG c900m, be a good direction to go? Just read someone on here saying they work great for females. Under $175 is preferd. And if it had use in a studio situation like micing snare, guitar cabs, or anything else really would be very nice. Doesn't have to be a condenser, but I guess that might be the best way to go. Any suggestions? And no the KMS105 is not an option $$$ wise.

SM57! easy enough. :)
 
Yeah, get an SM57 and a wind screen for it and you'll be good. Or, just pick up and sm58, but personally (you mentioned snare) I have found I like the 57 for snare more. I know most people say they are the same, but I'm attached to the 57. Any who, for live vocals, sm58 all the way.
 
Would like something better then a 57/58, I think my budget would allow for something better??

And remember primary purpose will be live female vocals, if our new mic has a use in the studio, all the better.

For that price range, there is nothing better than the SM57
 
It seems the prime motivation is getting a new mike for your wife. SM57s may be good for other things, but they may not suit her vocals.

See if you can find somewhere that will let you audition a range of mikes, and see if you can find, as a result, one that suits her vocal qualities the best. Then you can decide what else you might be able to use it for.

Try not to slip into a default option of just getting a general purpose mike like the SM58 because of what people say, and because it is general purpose (unless, of course, it just happens to be the one exactly right for her voice).

While that makes perfect sense, the cat came here and asked. So I told. I would think common sense would tell you to just go try some shit out and see what sounds the best. But he asked, so I gave my silly opinion.

Ya the plan is to get something better then what we have, which by some acounts is already better then a 58. Ya auditioning stuff is a great way to go, but not always do-able. The c900m on ebay for $149 has really caught my eye. That and maybe a e935. Both seem to be considered a step up from where we are now. So if anyone has comments on those two mics or any other mic in our price range, I am listening.

I have to disagree.......for that price there are several things better than the SM57 for that specific use, you just have to figure out which ones they are.

I'd get one of the Sennheisers or even an SM86 before I'd buy a 57 blind. With all the 57's floating around, you should be able to just borrow one and try it once. Audix makes some decent stage mics. Heck, for $55 you can try an AKG D770.

But gecko is right, dont do the 57 just because everybody tosses that number out too easily.....there IS a better mic for your purpose, and it really is a matter of finding the right mic for her voice.
 
Audix OM6 for dynamic (@$125 used on e-bay) The OM5 is decent as well.

Audio Technica AT-4054 - condensor and discontinued model that uses the AT4050 capsule and has built in bass roll off -- the AT4055 has no roll off -- replaced by the AE5400 that has a roll off switch and costs more (@$150 used on e-bay)

AKG C535eb - nice all purpose condensor. You should be able to find a new one to try at a decent pro audio store. About the only AKG mic that I like. (@$160 used on e-bay)
