Splitting up the mix

I posted this question in the Cubase Forum as well but figured maybe some of you dance producer/recorder types might know better.

For the latest project I've been working on in Cubase, I wanted to have the songs work together in a continuous mix, so the listener hears no break between certain songs but an interweaving of each (most) song. It's not a dance set but I want it to word the same way. However, I obviously want to be able to skip ahead tracks. My question is, is there a way in Cubase, or Sound Forge as that's where I do alot of mastering stuff, to have a continous wave but split it up so that you can skip tracks? Does anyone know how this is done if it is impossible in these programs?

Any help is very much appreciated?

in sound forge, let's say that you have everything as one file. a continuous set. well, for each track you want, you have to cut that section from the continuous mix, and make it a file of it's own. name the first song file one, or A. repeat through each song, making the cuts where you want the track to begin and end. after you've done that import the files into your cd-burning software, and make sure that it's in burn disc-at-once mode, so there's no pauses in between tracks.

cubase, i don't know, but if it deals with multitracking, you'll probably be dealing with bouncing sections of the entire session into their own files as noted above.

no cubase cant do it but wavelab is excellent for this. real easy to work with to. its just common sense in wavelab. you just place markers in the tracks and when you burn to cd it reads them as index tracks. just make sure you change the song gap to 0 and you should be fine

that sounds like my only option for right now dje. thanks for the idea.

soundman, you know of an estimate on what Wavelab goes for? I've heard it's good for mastering to, what'chu think?

I think that djessence route is the best for you. ;)

Unless... you have a version of Sound Forge with CD Architect.

It would be very easy for you to do with CD Architect (that's how I track my continuous mixes).

peace... :D

spin

I think it comes in at about 400 or 500 but it is well worth it. the price might actually be cheaper as i got mine sometime ago. and withthis being the holiday season you should be able to get a real good deal. or you could wait untill JANUARY when sales are real slow and they are dying to make a sale. either way it is still the way to go. it is excellent for mastering the whole real time processing is beautiful. you can apply an effect and undo it while it plays to see the difference. it also has unlimited undo which i love. down load a demo of it and check it out. its the shiznit

Damn spin, you are the shit. Top of my list today man. An how you get your replys so big and colorful anyways???

Aaaaaaaah. Very good Chriss. :D

You are True Master.
:D (speaking in my oriental wise man voice)

Nero (CD ROM Burning software) can do this without combining the two tracks before hand. And it's only $50 after a 30 day full demo.

Here's the recipe. (I'm going from memory, not on my DAW right now)

1. Make sure the track tempos are the same and the keys "harmonious", at least in the crossfade region (duh)
2. Make sure your 1st track ends on the beat with no fade.
3. Make sure your 2nd track begins on the beat with no fade.
4. Port them into Nero.
5. In the track properties set the "Track Spacing" to 0. (The default is 2 secs).
6. Then set the track "Crossfade Time" such that it equals a whole number of measures depending on tempo of the tracks.
7. Burn the disc "disc-at-once"

You'll have 2 (or more) tracks which nicely crossfade with no gap.

Here's more on Crossfade Time:
Say your an up and coming hipster mixing Nu-Skool breaks, your tracks are at the ultra groovin' tempo of 135 bpm, and you want them to slowly crossfade over 8 measures.
How Much time is that?

(4 beats-per-meas) * (8 meas) * (60 secs-per-min) / (135 bpm) = 14.222 seconds

Make sense?

Hope this helps :)
barefoot

Word barefoot, some good insight, will check out some of dem formulaeeee and let ya know.

Laj35, did you try to use the steps that barefoot shared with you?

I actually just went out and got Wavelab 3.0. However, it's been an extremely hectic week and I've been unable to get some alone time with the studio, I share a 3 bedroom apt w/ 2 other dudes, one of the rooms is the studio and often my bedroom (if not the couch), this aside from holiday visitors that just don't seem to want to go home. Soooo, unfortunately I've neither been able to play with Wavelab or give barefoot's formula a try. In fact I haven't even gotten the Nero demo, you think hitsquad's the bestplace to go and get it? Spin what type o shit you spin anyways? You're in Chi' town right? Good electronic scene there? Seattle is kinda lame, though Paul Van Dyke's been through a couple times lately and the D'nB' scene is supposively about to blow up, but we'll see.

6) Seattle is kinda lame ....

1) I definitely "feel ya" on that one. :)

2) I am not sure. It's probably the best place to start. ;) (I'll do some legal looking around for U).

3) I spin all formats. house, dance, hip-hop, r&b, 70's, 80's, disco, acid jazz, etc... I don't play that much Techno or Progressive (I just don't "feel" it). :(

4) Yep, I'm in "Chi", for the moment. Hopefully, I'll be going to Paris on the 21st of this month.

5) Yeah, the electronic scene is very nice here in Chicago.

6) I might start doing a monthly event in Seattle. I had a meeting with the president of a Seattle based marketing group, last Friday. She expressed the same statement that you posted. She is amassing the proper licenses to go foward with these monthly "benefits" (if you 'catch my drift'). :D

I will let you know what's up, once I receive the contracts. ;)

peace ...

Definitely do SPIN and I work at a four star hotel here so if yous in town let me know and I can hook up a room for ya.

If you come to Chi', let me know. I spin at Wave, it's the W Hotel. And .... I am about to start spinning at Kazbar in the House of Blues Hotel. Plus, my sister is the manager of the Bar, and Food & Beverage.
So, I can hook you up with some rooms, also. :D
