Can anybody recommend a free RMS meter plugin that displays the level in numbers and not just lighting up meters??

Voxengo SPAN is a free VST with both rms and peak rms metering.

You can't turn the RTA off if you find it distracting but you can slow it down enough an set the resolution so it really doesn't mean anything.

thanks..........both useful links. Yes, I am still a newbie so here is a newbish question. Whats the difference between the RMS and Peak RMS?? peak and RMS dont seem like they should be toghether?? The voxengo SPAN plugin has both RMS and Peak RMS meters. My loudest songs are usually at -15 RMS and peak RMS at around -10. But The peaks of the master fader meter on my audio software have a "peak" of like +1.9 or so. Dont think thats in RMS? Whats the differnce between the three?? Yes... i am still a newbie, so bring on the jokes, i'm game

RMS is always an average. Always. so what the average rms is, is for the whole song. the peak average is the high point of the previously mentioned average; the highest it got!

Theres lots of stupid nomenclature in the world !!!
the master peak meter is probably digital which means your clipping! anything above 0dbfs is a over(clip) it shouls be a negitive, if even -0.01!(squash)

You'll still need a Peaks (fs) meter. SPAN is just for rms which is an average power level (don't say that to an EE but it's the general idea) which some apps calculate using a 50ms window (like Adobe Audition) - then over time SPAN accumulates these rms values into a running average while you're listening to the song - until you click the number with your mouse and it resets and begins collecting again. According to the .txt file that comes with SPAN "PRMS" or PeakRms is also obtained thru a 50ms window so instead of being an average of power in that window is simply the highest level rms reached like flatfinger mentioned.

dfx RMS Buddy does this also and has a Peak meter too - this one has crashed a couple of times so I don't use it much but it's pretty good when it works:

i cant seem to download the Inspector plugin?? i dont know if its my connection or what?? it keeps stopping halfway and says file may be corrupted?? i have tried the SPAN and RMSbuddy plus. Both have been useful, but more the SPAN plug. I wanna try the Inspector cuz it seems to have a few extra features that would be cool to have. Any ideas what the problem is??

In what way is it not accurate for you?
The developer over there is very responsive to problems - if you don't have the time I'll be glad to report it (assuming I understand the problem).

I think it is pretty darn accurate at what it does. But it shows your peaks and averages over an entire spectrum, so it can be a little misleading if you are trying to figure the total. Or does it have a function for that that I just haven't found?

I use Elemental IXL Peak meter to get the total Peak (setting current peak speed & peak hold decay indicators) since SPAN doesn't give us the single total. I've kinda settled in to a Peak and Peak hold setting that makes sense to my eyes and ears...I'm gonna get murdered for saying this over here...

...but if you set peak hold on SPAN to infinite and set the spectrum [averaging] speed very slow - like 2 or even 1 - then you can see where in the spectrum you might have either good or bad stuff happening. Where this might come in handy is ear fatigue or headphones - does anyone break these rules in the ole project studio? I do - listen too long and/or after hours (neighbors & wife in bed - oops, you know what I mean ). If you see a huge peak in the spectrum that you don't expect - but it sounds fine...you might just want to recheck it again the next day just to make sure.

I found SPAN to be pretty good and accurate as far as i can see and hear. I tested it along side the RMS Buddy plug and It gives the exact same level readings as the RMS Buddy plugin did. So I dont think they are both wrong. Hey Decipha....... were u successful in downloading the Inspector plugin?? i still cannot complete the download. Dont know why??
