hello. my peavey classic 50 2x12 is making a strange rattling noise from the right speaker. i'm thinking i should replace the speaker to see if that fixes to problem...what type of speaker should i use? i know things can get a little strange with ohms and what-not...

Have you opened it up to take a look? Could be a loose mounting or something.

yeah, you could be right. i'm going to take the speaker out today and check it out...but i did check the screws that hold the speaker in, and they all seem to be nice and tight. i hoping to find something bouncing around in the cone or something when i take the speaker out later this afternoon...but i doubt it.

jon.

but i have a feeling that i am going to have to replace the speaker...so i'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

Nothing wrong with the blue marvels or grab a pair of celestions cheap at avatar, tell him Big Kenny sent you, he has no idea who I am but I just like to get my name out there.

The Blue Marvel speakers that come in those amps are pretty good. Swapping out speakers to find a sound in your head can get frustrating.

I play through an 80W 2x12 combo, and I get LOTS of rattles. I think its kind of inherent in a higher-wattage combo because the chassis takes so much abuse due to all of the vibrations caused by 2 12" speakers going crazy at high volumes.

It could be a few things, speakers included. The classic 50 is a tube amp, so it could be one or more tubes have become microphonic and are amplifying the vibrations of the chassis, or there could be something other than a speaker loose inside the amp (I had to do lots of tightening on my amp right after I got it to quelch some rattles), or it could very well be the speaker itself. Heck, my room rattles more than my amp at this point...there are lots of knick-knacks and junk laying around in my "studio space" (ok so its just an office-like room with no acoustical treatments whatsoever). Sometimes I have a hard time telling whether its my room or my amp that's rattling.

I'm sure that there are a couple of other causes that I'm not thinking of, but its not necessarily the speaker that causes these mysterious rattles in a combo amp.

well, i was wrong. i thought i checked all of the nuts around the speaker many times...but apparently i missed one. right on the top of the right speaker, there was a loose nut and washer...man, i swear i checked all of them many times. this one was tough to get to, but i tightened it up (along with all of the other screws that hold the speaker in) and the rattle is gone.

so, just goes to show...when you've triple checked something, check it a fourth time. you never know.

thanks for the feedback!
