nice

Nice song.....I can hear a lot of different influences in it....

Really cool. Can hear a kind of 90's psychadelia thing going on - a bit Jesus Jonesy.

I don't know if you'll like that comparison or not !

WELL, the original file was at lightning mp3, the site crapped on my upload.....
so here's a new parking spot for it:

use the far right button (downward arrow) to download, or the button left of that, to stream.

here are the guitars and cab that was used:

thanks for listening.....
yea, i got years of influences working in there, for sure!
LOL

lasagne-
glad you dig it.
you know, any comparison is ok by me....
folks always want to connect it with something, i get that.
it's funny tho, it's all relevent to your exposure to a long history of music, or not.
in other words, you can only compare to stuff you know, i'm guessing you know the jesus jones stuff pretty well,
tho i don't think i've ever heard them!
heheh
but either way, i'm just glad you checked it out, and liked it.

any other comments, before i pull this one out of the 'ether'?

Another good tune. Sounds good to me, you got a cool style going on with this one. You got alot of stuff going on there and some cool guitar effects. Really like the bass riff, too. Great song.

Alright man, you popped my little brain on this one! I've compared your songs to Ace Frehley, Yes, and Woodstock ~ I got nothing for this one! I'm still stuck at the beginning, trying to figure out how you did that atmospheric stuff  What kinda syth thingies did you use on that? All the levels sounded pretty good to me, it sounds like you already put a lot of time into this puppy. The pan sweeping was pretty cool too. And still, a song with minimal guitar parts has your smokin' tone sitting pretty in the mix. You're just showing off now ;)
Nice. :)

I'm hearing Peter Gabriel on this. Big time, actually. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it.

I'm jealous of your guitar gear, btw.

I know this thread is old, but I was trolling for mixes to listen to...

Holy Cow...Yes...Peter Gabriel. No doubt.

Great tune. The orchestration and arrangement is great, but the overall mix sounds kind of flat to me. Mono, no depth.

Generally really good. Well performed and general tone on everything was nice. Cool bass part. It might be a little too loud, but it was cool.

Can hear an out of sync vocal at :38 on the word "mind".

Great little sonic accents here and there.

I hear Jesus Jones, Gabriel, a little Alice in Chains too...quite a mix of styles!
Sounds pretty good to me. Doubled vocals could be tightened up in place.
Not so crazy about the breakdown/rap section at 3:00...

Maybe a little less wild guitar solos, and a little more hook/chorus.

Right off the bat, I'm noticing something in the percussion that seems to be interfering with other percussion instruments... I don't think it's the kick, but there's some other percussive instrument that's in the same space, that seems to be interfering... I wish I could be more specific, but straight outta the gate, that's what struck me. I'm gonna have to listen to this again to give more of a critique, because right now, I can't focus on anything else.

The sound I'm talking about is a flapping click sound.. Maybe it's the slap of the bass? I really can't tell.

The ending percussion madness is insane, too.

Alright... 2nd listen.. Guitars sound awesome. Love the bass performance. Wow...

The mix itself seems a bit messy at times, and that may be just because you've got so much going on.

FX on the vocals are very noticeable, but that's probably what you want, and it doesn't sound bad at all... so...

Not too shabby! Love the feel of the groove, for sure. Anywho.. .hope that helps.

holy crap!!!!
I love this place!!!! Im finding all kinds of inspiring stuff here.
I hear alot of influences as well....but............VERY ORIGINAL!!!!
Your playing and tone is great BTW!!
Lets hear some more!!

trumpino1
thanks man.
a lot of the backing track kudo has to go to 'crispy' my collab buddy.
he put those instruments together using Nuendo, laid them on top of my original drum track.
it was all guitars originally, we stripped it all off, and used weird stuff like the harmonium and all that....

max
popped the brain, eh?
LOL that's funny....
yep, ace is still in there, somewhere.
the first half, guitar wise, was using the demeter isolation cab, with it really cranked up.
the 2nd half, was palmer junction direct.

trevorQ
hey, gabriel was a big influence early on, thru the genesis years, and right up thru the album that had 'games without frontiers' on it, but i never made it to the big time era. that said, i hear what you mean.
the guitar gear, well, it's really no big thing, i've just paired things down thru the years to be focused on the recording part.
all my big marshall cabs and rack gear, has all gone away!

benign
thanks man, for checking it out.
the mix IS flat!!!
explanation on the following post.................................

MMM
yep that bass, it's in the one stereo backing track file, i can't do anything to it but eq it at this point.
this entire mix, right now, is only 12 tracks!
man, if i had all the instruments on seperate tracks, i'd go to town!!!
but, i had (1) stereo mp3, and i had to start working with that......

richJ
that's a good mix of artists you're hearing there......!
yeah, some of the vox is sloppy that way, i just really throw the mic up, and start going for it.
i think, i'll go back and mix OUT some of the slop.
i like, i mean, i really like, wild solos, so i'm keeping those!
i write these strictly for myself, so if others dig em, it's icing!

poetic-
thanks for listening and commenting.
there are some 'off-time' percussion going on in the backing tracks.
i would not have programmed them that way, but i gave CARTE BLANCHE to crispy, to do the music backing tracks however he wanted, and he had this idea of something like a wild and crazy morrocan dude going off the deep end every once in a while with an off-the-cuff frenzy thing, the whole idea of this track being a bit mind-bendy and possible some huka involved....
LOL
it's not the slap, you are correct, it's a percussion track. it comes and goes, thankfully, not for long enough but to bug the everloving piss out of some folks.
hehehe

it is a messy mix. but, honestly, that's the flavor of the whole track.
you've got this dreamy, floaty vocal melody happening, calmly floating on top of all this chaos.
it's exactly what the lyric is about. it's dead on time with the lyric.

the vocal fx, i changed ALL of that..... explanation in the following post......

klutzee
great man, thanks for checking it out.
i'm working on my second album release right now, i've got 9 finished tunes.... but none of them are like this one.
they're all different.
i'll post some others soon.....

well, last night i remixed the whole thing.

i figure........ why not?!

:p

so, since the original music backing tracks had been done by my collab-friend crispy, and he had only given me a 256kbps mp3 as a 'go-by', and then disappeared off the face of the earth..:spank:

i had no choice, if i wanted to continue working on the song, but to use the mp3 file..... convert it to 24 bit wav......and use it.:drunk:

it sounds flat, even tho it's a wide-spread mix, because of the loss of fidelity due to the mp3 process.

so....

creative eq and plugins, meet your mp3 file to convert and widen!:D

so i applied (2) waves plugins-
(1) a 8-band paragraphic EQ. this helped me tweak lows, some nice mids that were completely missing from the mp3 file, and some smoother high end, without making it gritty.

(2) S1 stereo imager.
i simply took the width out to about 135%, and that made a HUGE difference.
subtle, but there.
psycho-acoustic spatial imaging....
no shit.
LOL

then, i took my lead vocals...

now, those are 2 seperately sung lead vocals, that i blended at 5%left, 5%right, and mixed evenly. both had a hall reverb, and a medium-length spacey delay on them, with the reverbs and delays thrown on opposite sides from the panning.

now, i took the delay off the voices entirely.
brought up the reverb, to get rid of the dryness.
took the 1st lead vox track, and centered it.
i took the 2nd lead vox, and applied a 40ms delay to it, and threw all of that delay-mix only send, hard right, and took the actual vocal track, and panned it hard left.
i mixed them dead even with each other.

this effectively gave me a nice wide 'stereo' feel, on top of the somewhat constricted music backing tracks.

in general, it made the mix feel more 'stereo'.

i mean, there's nothing wrong with mono mixes, or tight to center mixes, but that wasn't really the idea with this mix to begin with, i was simply forced into a situation, and used it as a learning tool.

went back, after a couple of days of letting it sit, and listened to the two version side by side....

definitely digging the newer version.

I listened to some of your stuff on your Myspace page....
I dig your style man!!! I love Melange de la chauve-souris!!!!

That's pretty impressive work...the kind of song that if I were scanning through radio stations looking for something interesting, the dial would stop on that song, and volume would definitely be turned up. What I like is the Beatlesque harmony work which some folks are also hearing as Jesus Jones, I think. No criticisms here, just keep doing what you're doing - good stuff.

...there you go again fryin' my brain! Demeter...? Palmer wutzit? I thought I knew how you got your great guitar tone already, I wanna know how you got those synthy sounds in the beginning. What synth, what patch, etc.?
:D
