Does anyone use these together for micing distorted guitar cab?

Can anyone give me a good starting point/set-up for the two?

I messed around last night with several set-ups, but between the two differing tones of the mics, was not able to find a good A/B set-up...
The SM57 was on the grill, and then I moved the B1 from 5-8 ft. away.

Is it my room? Is it just the tone of the amp I need to tweek? It didn't sound horrible

AHH SHIT, DOG JUST GOT HIT BY A CAR!!!!!!!!11111

Try aiming the 57 at the speaker cone but move it back about 1 ft.Then move it forward (or back) an inch at a time till it sounds decent.I haven't used the B1 so I can't help you there.......sorry to hear about your dog.I've had two ran over out here

Dog is fine. Was running in circles chasing his tale in half an hour. Bloodied his paw a little, but he is walking and running fine so it seems. I'm sure he's a bit sore. Luckily I'm on a side street, so they weren't going that fast, could be worse for him, not to mention my kids were outside at the time.

Just out of curiousity... which mic did you like best when you tried miking your amp with only one of the two mics... the B1 or the SM57? Also, do you like the sound your getting out of your amp in the room your recording in?

PS... I'm glad to hear that your dog is ok.

Good to hear your dog is fine! Just for future reference (although hopefully you wont have to deal with something like this again), watch them closely after they get hit, even if they are running around apparently ok - or better yet still take them to the vet. Internal organ damage can take a while (hours/days) to become apparent, and when it does, the 'results' are almost always better for your dog if it got treated asap.

I've used a 57 on the grill, and the B1 behind the an open back cabnet to combine to get good tone. Neither mic sounded that hot when soloed, but when mixed together it was cool.

I haven't used the B1 by itself (except for vocals), so of the two the 57 sounded better to me. The B1 seemed to have a lot of mid to it, but as I said, this could very well be me...In all fairness this is probably only because I've had ample time to play around with the 57 and have only had the B1 a couple of weeks.

The cab is a 4X12, and is not open-backed.

What mic's would complement/replace a 57 on the grill for distant A/B micing ($200-$500 range)? I don't hate the 57 on the grill, but it just needs something!

One of my favorites is the MD421.

Is the MD421 the same as MD421II?

AMS has a matched pair of RODE NT5's, factory resealed for $349...

Decisions, guess I'll have to search around here a bit more, my amp is far from a Mesa!

There are different versons of the MD421 (older, newer, etc)... mine are about 20 years old... but I don't think I've ever heard a bad sounding MD421. The Rode NT5's are nice mics... but it wouldn't be my first choice for my main guitar amp mic.

I'm a fan of the B1 in general, especiallly for its price, but I thought it sounded like an aluminum can on a guitar amp.

How about some kind of omnidirectional mic placed in the room somewhere to pick up some of the room sounds. Or a crown "soundgrabber" pzm mic.

Agreed about the B1 sounding like an aluminum can on a guit. cabinet, but I do like it for vocals. With the exception of a REALLY crappy old old old keyboard, vocals and guitar cab are about all I've tried it on so far...

Oh well, I have plenty time to read up on various mics before I'm able to afford one (or two, or three...). For once in my life I'm actually aggressively trying to catch up on old bills (medical), and Mamma has me on a budget. Wait till she sees the list I've compiled in the meantime! Or maybe this is another instance where a "little white lie" would be more appropriate...

Hmmmmm...... :D

I only use a 57 on electric guitar amps. see my fun sample if you want, but the guitars are low inthe mix....

I guess I'll also try a distant mic also, next time why not, I usually only use one track so I'll pop another one somewhere.
