I am happy with the performance of the C4'a both in cardioid and omni at this point and they beat the pants off a 603 - the transient resonse is like night and day.

The Marshall MXL603S is a very good sounding mic and cost a lot less than the C4 will, so for the Studio Projects C4 to "beat the pants off a 603" it is going to have to be one hell of a good sounding mic. After you post your review on the C4, I sure hope you send Harvey a free C4 and he does a 603/C4 shoot out review. And of course we know which mic's Harvey likes by looking at his equipment list.

Well, I suppose my comments do imply that the 603 is wearing pants. For our in-house tests, this was not the case. Of course if the 603 were to leave the house, I would expect it to be properly attired...
Harvey and everyone else might've seen a pair of C4's by now were it not for the late changes made to the capsule, but believe me, it was for the best.

Well, my mic locker list is a bit misleading when it comes to the Marshall stuff. Here's what happened:

After I reviewed the Marshall stuff, I boxed up all the Marshall stuff and the SP "C" series and sent it to Ty Ford so he could hear them and do his own evaluation. He wasn't as knocked out as I was about the Marshalls, or the SPs. We spent a lotta hours on the phone, and to make a long story shorter, he sent them back to me. I sent them to a few other people as well, often with me paying for the shipping both ways. After the last round of testing, I was ready to send everything back to SP and Marshall.

I called Marshall and said I wanted to buy the V77s, the V67s, and the 603s and they gave me a really great price and said that since I had spent so much time and my own money sending these all over the country, just keep the ones I was gonna send back to them.

All the SPs went on to Stephen Paul as did my V67Gs and 603s, (which I had already bought). So that's how I wound up with so many Marshalls.

That was pretty nice of Marshall to give you some mic's for doing the review. I think that's the way it should be. So, if I understand you correct, out of all the Studio Projects and Marshall mic's, the only ones you wanted to buy were the Marshall V77s, V67s, 603s (and MXL990's I think I read in another thread "but not on your equip-list") and you were going to send all the other mic's back? Is that correct, or were there any others you want(ed)?

Not exactly. The only units I could "afford" to buy at the time were the V67s and the 603s. They made me a good deal on the V77 and 2003, and gave me the others after they learned how much I had spent in overnight shipping these all over the place.

I recently got a V69 from them, and an MXL990. I'm still negotiating price with them, since they want to charge me way more than what I would pay if I bought them from Musician's Friend.

It was nice to get those others at a lower price or free, but I certainly wasn't expecting it nor did it influence my review in any way, since the review was already posted before I found all this out. I'm sure I'll be buying a few Studio Project mics as well.

I was in no way even hinting that Marshall (or anyone else) influenced you in anyway what so ever. In fact I respect and trust your reviews completely. What I’m trying to find out from you is what Marshall and Studio Projects microphones you would buy for your studio?

MXL V77
MXL V67
MXL 2003
MXL 990
MXL 603


Are there any other Studio Projects or Marshall microphones that you would buy for your studio that are not listed above? Are there any microphones on the above list that shouldn't be on the list? Would you rather not comment on which particular Studio Projects mic's?

To the Marshall list, I would put them in this order:

MXL V69
MXL 603
MXL V67
MXL 990
MXL 1006
MXL V77
MXL 2003

While I like the V77 and 2003, I'll prbably start using those less often although I may retire the 1006 in favor of the 2003, but I'll hafta listen to them both side by side first. I'm looking forward to listening to my V67Gs again as soon as they get here.

I'd probably add some of the Studio Projects mics as well, but I still haven't found my notes from the SP listening sessions.

Do the new Studio Projects C4 mic's have glued and bolted diaphragms so they will last a long time or are the C4's only glued? Oh, and what about the new LSD-2 mic? Thanks
