Well I can't find it in the manual so could anybody please tell me what the switch on the BACK of the B1 is for?the one that sez ____, 75, 150 ?

Thank you.:)

Studio Projects B-1 doesn't have a switch on the back, or anywhere else. Whose B-1?-Richie

Thanks for the replies guys.
Well this is freakin me out a little cuz my "SP B1" has a switch on the front AND the back.
Can someone have a look please?

mic

Hard to get a good pic with all the glare, but it definately sez Studio Projects B1 and came with warranty card and serial number.I bought it in December.
Thanks.

Good stuff BigRay ^5
I think Trace is about my favourite album of all time.
Album heh heh, how old am I?

The switch on the front is a PAD. Basically, if the mic preamp is getting overloaded easily with little gain applied, you can turn down the mic output by either 10 or 20dB before it get's to the mic preamp.

The other switch is most certainly a High Pass Filter. You can either have no filter, a filter at 75Hz, or a filter at 150Hz.

Basically, a high pass filter only let's frequencies above the filter pass through. It turns down frequencies below the filter setting based upon a "slope", which generally on mics is 18dB per octave, which means that if the filter was set at 150Hz, 75 Hz would be 18dB quieter than it originally was, and 37.5Hz would be 36dB quieter than it originally was, etc....

Now, the HPF (high pass filter) may have a different slope. Whatever it is, the above describes what it does.

Hope that helps.

the mic also looks like it cam in a case? The B1's to my knowledge didnt come in a flight case either...just a little zipper pouch. Where did you get the mic???

Thanx Ford Van, that`s very helpful :)

Thejeremy-It came in a sealed cardboard box with the zipper pouch, foam windscreen, shockmount and manual.
I bought it at a music store in Montreal.

Well it certainly appears to be a Studio Projects B-1 with a pad and a bass cut switch, which leaves only 4 possibilities:

1. It's some kind of early production model that had those features, since discontinued.

2. It's fresh out of the factory, and they've decided to add those features (which would be cool)

3. The mic is modded, adding those features (which might or might not be cool)

4. It is a fake (which would not be cool)

I think only Alan Hyatt can answer this one. I assure you my B-1 has no pad, and no bass cut switches, which is too bad.

Anyway, seeing as how you obviously have those features, here's what they are for:

A pad, also known as an attenuator, decreases the mic's output by a set amount. This is used when recording very loud sources, such as cranked up amps and kick drum, which can overload the mic or other components in the signal chain, causing nasty distortion called clipping.

Bass cut, also known as a high pass filter, is used to avoid picking up low frequency rumble, such as footsteps, and can be used to decrease bleed from low frequency sources such as kick drum when you are trying to record snare. It can also be used to decrease low frequency boom when recording acoustic guitar or similar instruments.

Alan Hyatt, who is an occasional poster on this board, owns PMI, the parent company of Studio Projects, and will be happy to answer your email. I'm sure he can explain why this mic has those features. They are perfectly good features, but I've never seen them on a B-1.

Here's a picture right from SP's web site-

There ain't no switches on that mic, so how come you have them? Beats me.-Richie

Thanks Richard for the very helpful reply.
I could find no mention of these switches in any info or pics I found either so I'm hoping it's not a fake which would suck.

I've emailed tech support and sent them the serial number so hopefully get to the bottom of this soon.I'll post the reply.

Thanks again for the help, you guys really know your stuff :)

you could also send a PM to Alan Hyatt. might make for a quicker response. I am curious to know the answer to this myself so no matter what the outcome, please post what you find out.

"This is the new B1. We added on the dual pad and dual Hi-Pass filters. We just have not yet changed the packaging because the mic was ready before we could do the photography. So quite a few people have received this mic early, but it is a very good thing. Nothing has changed sonically, just more control...so it is our new B1, and not a fake."

Sweeeeeeet :)

Excellent addition to a mic that has helped stretch the boundaries of what a cheap mic can do. Good job, and no pre-production hype. There- now the phantom negative rep guy can give me some. -Richie
