SP-808 Upgrade

I have the original black SP-808 groove sampler.

A freind of mine has the newer EX version with some vocoder and other new effects.

Can i upgrade mine with a simple firmware upgrade? or are these effects only obtainable with a new board?

No. the sp-808ex is the successor to the 808. No upgrades like that are available.
