I know there are several related threads on this subject already. However, I have some questions, and might as well make ANOTHER thread.

I have been talking out of my hat, as I don't actually have the damn thing YET.

So - the inputs on the live drive, and the inputs on the back of the PCI card: are they inputs seperate? Can you plug two sound sources into them, and get two seperate tracks that you can use in a multi-track recording program?

Can you use the soundfonts as a cheapo sampler? Are the other soundfonts available on the internet any good? Keep in mind that I am comparing them to the general midi on an ensoniq audioPCI, and anything better than that would constitute 'good' for me.

I know that there are inexpensive multi-in and out cards. But for the same price range (a hundred dollars more for Americans means 150-200 more for me in Canada), do you get a midi interface and sounds? Do you get a DSP chip (regardless of quality)? Do you get a quite reasonable amount of bundled software?

Unless I am missing something, it seems like a good starter set-up for me.

Hey,

I have a SBLive and while I dont have the Live drive, my understanding is that is just a port replicator, so you dont have to fish around behind your PC evertime you want to re-patch.. it is kind of pricey for my taste, and you could probabaly build one if you wanted to..

As far as soundfonts go, I have found some pretty good ones, definatly better ths GM

This guy has the biggest collection I have found so far, check it out

SBlive is a great way to start, I am very happy with it, I use the sounfonts a lot since I dont own a keyboard

Good Luck..
