Soundproofing on a budget

In the next year or so, as my equipment builds up i'm going to be looking at recording an album for my band. I play on spending a week in a good studio to do drums but i'd like to do the rest at home. Id like to spend no less than $1000 ($500 US) on small temporary room so i can record vocals and guitar. Obviosly it wont match a real studio with an acousticaly treated room but i'd like something that will still sound good enough for a semi-profession release. Is it possible? What materail should i look at getting? How could i go about this?

You could probably slap together a temp. vocal booth for that much, but you might be better off to put that money towards some portable room treatment panels that you could put up temporarily and store when not in use. Do you live in a noisey environment? Are you short on space?

There's a few threads in here on this type of thing. The general consensus is that fibreglass and studio foam are the most bang for the buck.
 
Mars has Auralex room packages on their website for $99. You're not going to get much cheaper than that unless somebody gives you a freebie....
 
The room is fairly quite when the house is empty so i wouldnt be soundproofing from anything load. What is acoustic foam (as apposed to normal foam), about how much does it cost and where do you get it from (im in Oz so places in the US wont help)
