Hello,

I planning to make a small room soundproof so I can play my drums there.
I live in an appartment in Amsterdam on the third floor. Right above my apartment is the room. My plan is to use old matrasses to put against the walls and on the floor. Using hardboard floorpanels mounted on top of neopreen blocs and thick carpet will hopefully block the sound enough not to disturb the neigbours and my flatmate, who enjoys watching TV a lot.
My question is, do you guys think it a sound idea.
The reason I'm planning on using old matrasses is quite simply the fact that I have no budget and want to do this as cheap as possible.
Comments and suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanx

You will have a very difficult time achieving the kind of soundproofing you seek, even with the best techniques.

I can tell you the mattress thing really won't work. THink of sound as an insidious insect, capable of finding the one hole in the wall in which to travel out of. As you play the drums, all the bass sounds will travel along the ceiling joists and vibrate the rooms below. the rooms below the attic will act as resonant chambers for the drumming. Matresses will not change this one bit.

I would first consider if you can build a room within a room. Do a google.com search on "acoustics 'room within a room'" and you'll get lots of pointers. Unfortunately, this is expensive, you lose ceiling height and wall depth and ususally is semi- to totally permanent.

Your other notion of carpet/neoprene/floorboards is probably a good idea. I would look into that route, but be prepared to pay for your flatmate to go see a movie or two...

How bout trying mounting your set on Grammas? I have no experience with them but they've gotten good reviews...
