Soundcard Helllllllp!!!!!

Hi guys. I am a self confessed lower than shoe string recordist.
Been using the onboard sound on my mobo for a while, was happy
with the results. But I needed midi capability. So I try hooking up
an Xwave sound card ( made by yamaha ). It installs like a breeze.
No problems at all. But whenever i try to shutdown, the pc just restarts
again , when I shut it down again it just repeats this. There's no way to turn it off so I just pull the plug.

I've tried updating my sound drivers up to win98SE, bios updates, and some
windows control panel setting changes but nothing prevents
the pc from restrating over and over again. I've ran out of options.
However I'm inclined to think there's a setting somewhere that's
causing this. I'm willing to chnage IRQ's and go DOS if that's what it will take.
I wonder if any of the super tech's in the forum have some advice. Atleast
give me another lead to follow. I've ran out of options to explore. Thanks.

P.S. could there be a needed jumper change somewhere in the
power section? Whenever i pull out the sound card, everything is
back to normal.

What MIDI capability do you need? MINI IN/OUT? Internal MIDI synth?

Dump the no name card and get something better like the Audiophile. If you don't have $150 to spare, at least go out and buy a OEM SB Live or Audigy for $50.

Try disabling the onboard sound in the BIOS if possible and also install the Xwave to a different PCI slot. Uninstall the drivers first then move the card.

I just need 1 midi in and 1 out. Just to hook up my keyboard so I can
do basic midi plus audio on a DAW program. Maybe I'll get a used
Reality softsynth from Seer systems. I read it's easy on the requirements.
Also plan to use soundfonts but with Reality not the SB card.

I did try disabling the onboard sound in the bios, but it still
keeps restarting.

I did plan on getting the Audiophile but if it doesn't work on my
system it's almost too impractical and costly to have it returned to
the US. There's just an abundance of Soundblasters in the Philippines where i live. Yes for about 50 bucks.

If the X wave never sees the light of day i might get an SB. Yes I know
it's from creative, built for gamers.

If I could just figure out why the Xwave works perfectly but prevents my pc from shutting down.

BTW my Board is a Gigabyte. Guess these guys rock on everything else but
sound. Probably the homerecordist is the last guy on their list, if there at all.

Thanks for the thought Crankz1

This same problem was occurring with the Audigy 2 sound cards on some computers. Mine would lock the computer with a "squeal of death". The problem is more likely with your windows drivers and not just audio drivers. I solved my problem with updating windows xp drivers from the creative web site. Check for compatibility with win 98.
