Sound Proofing Basics

Hi, i'm about to move into a house and I need to know what it'll cost me and how to sound proof it as best as possible with the intent on cost effectiveness. I just need to be able to play in the middle of the night without neighborly problems. It doesn't have to be perfect.

Can you point me to a guide or anything that may help me?

Carpet or thick blankets hanging about 4" away from the walls (causing a dead air space) will help. Checkout Ethan Winer's acoustics forum... although Ethan is all about acoustic treatment, there's some good sound proofing ideas there too... here's a link.

Double layer those walls, carpet directly on the walls, then heavy drapes or blankets hung a few inches away from the walls, this deadens the room quite a bit but it stops a lot of sound. Foam on the celing (not foam rubber, that's gust good for padding) that's about the fastest and cheapest things i can think of.
