Sound Module???

I need opinions on a decent sound module to use with my digi-001 setup. I want to use triggers and the "Drumkit From Hell" sample cd. Ive already ordered the DKFH cd from the website, now I just need to know of a good, relativleycheap soundmodule that I can use to run the cd. I called my local Music store today but they are only interested in selling me the more expensive units and I didnt tell them that I had already ordered the DKFH cd cause they would be less likley to answer my questions if they knew I wasnt gonna buy everything from them. thats why I'm asking you guys. any ideas???
 
First off Marty, you gonna need a software sampler to use DFH, like tubedude mentioned in another post such as battery. Im not real familier with PT so it may have a software sampler already, dont know. To trigger these drum samples you will need an external unit. Then you would also need a controller to control the sound module. A sound module will be overkill unless your interested in the sounds that come with the unit. All you really need is a midi keyboard. You can pick up a used one on ebay cheap. You could also look ito controllers like the Oxygen8 from m-audio that does not produce sound, just midi data.

When I ordered DKFH I ordered the multiformat cd which the websit says comes with Battery so i guess I have that. Cant I just run the triggers into my digi and thru Battery and into PTLE then? I hope that would be the case...
 
Ok, I overead your mentioning drum triggers.
Im assuming your using triggers attached to your kit.
Then run to a drum module {that your looking for right ?}

Bad news !! DFH does not come with battery.
The multi-format has mappings for battery, halion EXS24, etc..
But these programs do not come with it. All you get is 2 CD's with loops on one and samples on the other.

You could pick up an Alesis D4 module used pretty cheap. This has 12 inputs and I would use the midi for sampling DFH.

I think it comes formatted for Battery, n0t with Battery. Battery is a $150 piece of software on it's own.
 
If its not one thing its another...

Ive been looking at the alesis dm pro 20 bit drum module...
Is that over kill? Like I said I only want to use the samples that Im getting withthe DKFH. Ive been so confused about this sound module/drum module/midicontroller.

I have posted about 3-4 topics about this...and people have been answering just small parts of my questions. Cant someone who might have a setup similar to mine whos trying to do the same thing just tell me what I need to get to make this stuff work.

Like I said...Im gonna get some triggers. I have DKFH on the way. I guess Ill have to get battery to be able to map the sounds out with my Digi-001. Then Im assuming that Ill need a module...like the d-4. Is that all??? Please Help Me!!!
 
I think you got it covered now Marty.

1. triggers to create an electrical impulse every time you whack something.
2. module to convert that impulse into midi events
3. a host program that can record those midi events.
4. a software plugin that can convert the recorded midi events into audio.

That's the easy part! Just wait until you start trying to mix it all together with music! Have fun.

So do you have triggers for the cymbals also or are you micing them?
 
I think your on the right page now marty.
Here's my setup as an example.

I have a DW kit but no triggers so when I want to use the DFH samples I use my electric kit to play on with a Alesis D5 drum module. The midi outs of the D5 are tied to my Lynx1 card. I use the virtual instrument witin Logic called the EXS24. I record my drum tracks via midi to a midi track. The DFH has a mapping for EXS24 so they can be assigned to the drum pads on my electric kit. When I record the midi track it triggers the samples from DFH. Once Im through I go back and edit where needed and then bounce the tracks to audio tracks. I usually setup tracks in groups. Bass kick on 1 track, snare on another, Toms, Rides, Crashes, Hats, etc..This allows to setup parameters such as pan position for each drum, cymbal, kick, snare and so on.

It can be somewhat confusing at first but it gets easier as you learn. You also need to be sure PT supports battery. PT can be a little funny about 3rd party plug-ins. I would check with them and see what plug-in instrument works best with digi001.
 
Alright Thanks guys...I think I AM starting to get this. As to wheather Im gonna trigger the cymbals? Yes..I hope.

But I also ran into another small problem...triggering my acoustic hihiat. I have been racking my brain on how to do it. If ya think of it, it would make sense that you cant just slap a trigger or two onto the hihat cause what about doing open and closing hihiat hits on it? Nothing to tell the triggers that its opening and closing.

So that open up a whole new can of worms. If I cant figure that out with the help of you guys I guess Ill just have to mic mi hihat the traditional way and do it as an overdub so its all by itself. Or Ill have to keep my hihat work to a minimum. I was looking at the little electronic footpeddals but I dont know how to get that to work with the real hihat. Ya see if I have my foot on the REAL hihat pedat and am opening it and closing it I would almost need an extra foot do operate the electronic one also. Do you get my drift? But thanks "Stealth" and "Enrichenryus" Ive been waiting for someone to tell me Ive finally got it close...
 
i've had nothing but frustration with electric hihats. there is nothing that comes close to the real thing! sorry, but that's the bad news. a lot of people trigger the drums and mic the cymbals.

Simple solution.
If you are going to use a trigger on cymbals, then substitute a cymbal ride as a hat. Once you have the midi data recorded you simply move the notes to a hat sample from DFH. You then can create all positions of the hats. Its very simple to do when your still in midi format.

Come again? I dont see how I can use a cymbal to simulate the opening and closing of a hihat. If I only need to play my hihat straight closed on a song then I could do it with a regular trigger. But I dont know how to show like a open to closed hit or anything inbetween, Im confused...Do ya see what I mean?

If you want to invest more money for that cymbal pad thats fine. But I dont think you understand the concept quite yet. It can be done as I explained simply. I would have to say, once you get DFH and battery if thats what you get you will soon see what Im talking about. You will need hands on to get a grip of this concept.
 
Yeah I figured that once I got the DKFH and started messing around with it it would make more sense. I just needed to get some preliminary answers from my peers so that I could get an idea of how much it would cost me and what kind of equipment I would need. I didnt want to buy say triggers and then find out I need this, that and the other thing to make it work. Well, I guess I do need this that and the other thing. But at least I know which things I do need. Thanks Stealth... we can let this thread die now unless others want to continue it. But I know what I need to know. thanks

Ok, I will finish with this. The open and closed sounds of the hats are samples. The midi note is just that {a note} you can position it within the matrix to trigger an open hat or closed hat or anything inbetween. All you need is a sequence of recorded notes to work with that can be triggered by any pad, even a bass kick. You can reassign any note to any sample. Example{I can hit a tom pad at the tempo of a hat. When Im done I can go to the midi matrix and move the notes to whatever sample I choose. In this case hats. Whats even better is I can move them all at once. Where I would like an open hat is just a matter of moving that note to the appropriate sample. If your a drummer this will come easy for you. I hope this make it a little clearer.
