Porter,
Thanks for your replies, I'll check out those URL's and see what I can make of the reviews. What I meant about "close" is that you're at least some hours away driving... I'm 3 flights that total around 36 hours away from OZ-land and I've been in many parts of the world (North, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East) but I've never even been close to Australia!!! So I have NO IDEA how things are down there, what voltage do you guys run on, what beer you drink (well, I've had Fosters a couple of times and have to say that it is extremely good IMHO) what cigarettes I'll smoke, what TV is like down there, etc etc

Costa Rica is a really small country, however, I believe that we have some similarities too Australia... Our beer consumption is fairly high and our beer is really good; our beaches are full of surfers (we have some pretty good waves around here BTW) our country is extremely peaceful, safe and calm.

9 hours vs 36 hours ... arh yeah, I'm not tooooo far from Byron Bay.

Beers in Australia, Fosters (made by Carlton), VB, XXXX (said as 4 X), Hahn Premium, Tooheys, or a slightly more 'up maket' are Crown. My favourite would be either the Hahn or Crown. And yes, the beer consumption over here is pretty high.. I think we are in the top 4 in the world or something... lots of 'Good Times'

Power.... 240Volts... 3 pins that look like this:

Cigarettes - can't help you there, I don't smoke... well I don't look :D

TV... there are 5 main free to air channels. If you can get cable, you get about 50 channels (3 music channels.. Channel V, MTV & MusicMax).

Our beachers are also full of surfers, along with very nice ladies... the most dangerous of these are 'white pointers' <--- I'll let you work that one out for yourself.

We are a pretty friendly country... remember the 2000 Olympic Games :D

I know whatever you choose will be the right decision.

Voltage: 240/250 50Hz
Beer: Huge range. My personal fave is actually imported Belgian Beer called Grolsch. However, Carlton Mid-Strength tastes fine and is low alchol content.
Cigarettes: I'm a non-smoker. Give up the habit, Carlos! :) Smoking is not allowed in restaurants, enclosed public spaces (like shopping malls, airports etc), public transport and in offices.
TV: Is predominantly USA programmes, plus crap locally-produced reality TV and home make-over rubbish. Oh yes, The Bill (gritty British Police drama) is shown twice a week.

If you're into outdoor activities, you'll be in 7th Heaven Carlos! Cricket, softball, baseball, soccer, rugby, Aussie rules football, swimming, surfing, yachting, volley ball, tennis. (Did I miss anything out???)

And we speak English!(?) :D

If you do get over here Carlos, you'll have a wonderful time.

I have been to Australia quite a few times and I have to say its the best country in the world I've ever been to and would top my places to live list.

Downsides are that its full of whinging Ozzies, always moaning cos they get their ass whooped by our (England) rugby team:D

Did you get to the West Coast Paul? We have the best beaches by far in Australia (sorry Porter, it's true...)

Aussies NEVER whinge!!!

Not unless they're in the UK moaning about the WEATHER...

Just remember what Andrew Denton once said:
We don't care if we win or lose...
So long as we beat NEW ZEALAND!

I went to Perth once, thought it was a fabulous place, but I did like Sydney. Trouble was, I went on business so didn't get to see much of Perth and the surrounding areas. Whereas in Sydney, I went there quite a few times and got to travel and stay a few places.

Aussies Always whinge! They moan about everything, even the Americans I worked with used to comment about how much Ozzies moan, whinge and complain:eek: :D

But you do have some lovely Sheila's:D
