go to a car stereo store and pick up some dynamat.. put a layer on the inside of the case.. everything metal... the sides of you computer..the inside..do them too.. you will hear a major difference... i'm actually about to put some extra wedges on the outside of my case...

home depot has some stuff just like dynamat and its cheap...

o build a little desk, and have a area for a computer with the back open.. it'll drop about 10db...a friend of mine has a real noisy computer he got a omni rack little shelf type thing.. when he shuts the front of it you can't even his computer...the open back is facing a corner....

Dynamat is an excellent suggestion - good one!

One thing I find annoying is my rackmount HP has terrible fan noise - in the 4U box there are many, many fans. Since its overkill for the heat thats generated, I simply put two 1N4001 diodes in series with the "red" lead of each fan, thus stepping down the voltage, the fan speed, and the noise. Made a HUGE difference in the amount of noise and enough that I can't hear it enough to be annoyed.

The only thing thats annoying now is the CD-RW I have in the machine, burning of CD's is LOUD. I've never had an open mic at the same time I was burning something, so its fine. And my CD duplicator is in another room, because everytime if finishes a CD, it makes this loud whirrrrrrr kerchunk, kerchunk, kerchunk whirrrrrr noise when it switches discs.
