sound dampening blankets

which do you guys think work better sound dampening blankets or studio foam?
 
Studio foam looks worlds better, so if it's for clients, then I'd go with the foam.

If it's just for you and cosmetics are not a concern, then I'd go with a big heap of moving blankets. I just got 10 of them (about 6 feet by 4 each -- and real thick and heavy) for $12 / piece. I love 'em. So portable, so versatile . . . so . . . heavy. I'm ordering 10 more next week.

Drape one over a couple of mic stands for a makeshift gobo. Hang a few more on the wall. Stack a pile of them in the corner for a bass trap. Scatter a few around the guitar amp. Take another with you to the park on your next picnic.

Lots of sound can hit them on one side, but not much comes out the other. Such a grand concept. What an invention.
 
Yeah, exactly. The single cheapest and most effective thing for treating a room quickly and easily.

If you hang 'em on the wall, that's good, but make sure to hang 'em six inches out from the wall. That way they kill sound not only on the way to the wall, but also the reflection on the way back out from the wall.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you pick yours up? They sound like just what I've been needing-I can't build a permanent vocal booth where I'm at, so a portable one it is. Thanks!
 
I just looked in the Yellow Pages under "moving supplies" and called around untill I found someone who had them. Can't remember the name of the supplier, but they were local to Chicago. There's places online where I'm sure you can find some, too -- even saw some on ebay last week.
 
Are they supposed to be so ugly?

I don't think moving blankets - or anything else for that matter - could possibly get any uglier than the ones I got. I'll put money on it. If anyone wants to post picks, I'll bet $100 my moving blankets are the most hideous-looking things out there. :D

I need a few myself... how are the ones from Uhaul? I was there the other day, but too busy to pay attention. Nice and heavy and sound absorbing?
 
Ya they are real heavy. I made a makeshift sound booth with them and it was dead silent. I will post some pictures of the booth in a while.
 
I have a relative that's a district manager at U-Haul - I'm gonna hit her up for a discout <total cheapskate alert!>.

Seriously, Chess thanks for the excellent tip. I'm going to be building a vocal booth and some dampening around the kit, and I could care less what it looks like - it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the foam kits I've been looking at.
