Some advice please. I have Cubasis and a Hoontech soundcard.
The sound card appears to have died so I am looking at a replacement. Any preferences or what not to get?
Thanks

Hey Clive, if your getting semi-serious about quality I would try to keep away from Soundblaster cards. They seem to be very tough to set up and get working right. Unless something has changed driver wise in the last month that I have been out of the loop they have latency issues.

How many inputs are you looking for?

Bass Master
As I record solo it isn't an issue, this thing has 2 audio and a midi, I don't have a problem with the number of inputs. Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "soundblaster"?
This is the only card I have any experience with, the guy in the shop recommended it so I took his word for it.
You are right about it being hard to set up tho'. I had to send it back to the shop to get that done as the local computer man coulden't make head nor tail of it. thats a pain as I live 1800 km away from the state capital and thats the closest place to send it.

Hey Clive, soundblasters are a Creative Live product that is the soundcard packed in with a majority of the PC's sold in america. They are an industry consumer sound card staple. But I have heard complaint after complaint about them in DAW situations so I was trying to save you some trouble.

Personally I use an Aardvark Q-10 but that runs at least $800 usually so that is probably not the option for you. There are lots of people here who can give you good suggestions.

Come on folks, what are you using and what did it cost? He has to have good options for under $150 right?

Hey Clive,
In Asia, you might want to look into the following:

http://www.esi-pro.com/esi-pro/eng/
or
http://www.csound.com/

Haven't heard much on this board about them, but the product looks good. I like the wami rack, personally, but they also make a 4 channel 24/96 card.

I suspect you may get them cheaper in OZ than the website shows, if only because you're closer to Korea...well, maybe not, but you may be paying in A$ rather than US$

I keep meaning to go down to the distributor to find out what kind of price they could give me, but...

If I see any deals here, I'll let you know.

Cheers,
Mike

One to check out with 2 audio in/ 2 audio out and midi (if they still make them) is a D-Man PCI by Midiman (M-Audio). It sounds decent, and didn't cost all that much.
