Soon to change from WinXP to Win2000...

I went from 98se to XP. I've never tried 2000.

XP is not getting along nicely with something in my system and I can't nail it down. I could figure it out and then *think* I am happy, but truth be known, I have already given up some things to make XP work, and looking back - I want everything to work!!

So, I hear good things about 2000 - from people here whose opinions I respect. Nothing will ever satisfy me, though.


BTW, although I should use an entire thread to let this news out, I will save the trouble and just post it here:

My iMac died. I was using it for label printing, web, website design, other graphics, word proc., school, blah blah blah. It frigging died.

I replaced it with a pre-built PC (eMachines) with XP home. I like it.

I am all PC all the time. No more Macs.


Well, I still have 3 old mac dinosaurs, but that doesn't count. I don't use them.

Okay, time to go. School starts tonight.

Pretty much anything that works in 2000, works in XP. XP is 2000 with a facelift and most 2000 device drivers work with XP anyways...

XP gives me bette latency values than 2000 did also.

XP works for some but not all. 2000 works for some, but not all. 98 works for many. But not all.

The needs of the many outweigh those of the few.

And that is the MS slant. Or is that backwards?

XP does work and it is a viable OS. But there are many variables. Jumping on the nearest train won't always get you to your destination.

Hardware/Software manufacturers are never in sync. It's a big drag, but that is life.

Bottomline - Whatever works.

Brad, what is not working with XP? You haven't identified your key issues. Perhaps if we knew your issues they could be solved without doing anything.

Regarding XP hiding everything, just turn on classic view and you will see everything you had in 2000. XP is just 2000 with a facelift and slightly better driver compatability. Basically by going back to 2000 your will have the same issues with the classic look.

I'm running 2k also and it NEVER crashes. Works great with one small problem I thought I'd point out. Win 2k has a 10 device limit. That is, if your using something like a MOTU 24i with 24 inputs, your only going to be able to use 20 of them (the 10 device limit is stereo). I've searched the web to hell and back looking for a work around this and have yet to find anything. In fact if anyone else knows of something, let me know. Just thought I'd warn ya if you need 24 tracks.

One more vote for 2000. Never used XP (except on my parents PC to check email while I'm visiting them). The thing is rock solid with N-Track, Delta 44, Waves plugins. It's been up for ~20 days right now and I see no need to reboot. My 98 machine had to rebooted a couple times a day. Also, my PC is pretty slow (450mhz) but has decent RAM (256). I have no problems getting ~6 tracks which works fine for my folky acoustic music.

You have a lot of misconceptions about Windows 2000. It is by far the most stable and least bloated operating system ever released by Microsoft. It performs fantastically in audio and video applications.

In fact, the differences between XP and 2K in terms of audio are inconsiquential at best - mostly cosmetic.

I'm still looking for the benefits in fact...besides hiding everything useful, I'm much more at home on my 2K machines.

MOTU Thing 24 track stuff

Can you have more than 24 tracks at once in XP, like hooking up 3 2408s for 72 inputs? I was thinking about getting more boxes for my setup. If I can't do it, I will save my money.

there should be more recording options for dos. if you could just install the powerful (and still being developed) drdos and still use your hardware and soome genius figured out how to make a useable interface for modern recording under the operating system, your system would destroy any previous performance records. of course all of this will never come to be, but imagine only having to use a meg or so of ram for your os instead of the 100 + that xp can use if you let it "do it's thing".

XP has some quirks, but over all I'd say it is a more stable - safer - OS than 2K.

Performance wise, the two are very similar. XP has system restore - which is very usefull - free HD space is used to insure that files don't get corrupted. I've lost many a 2K intallation because of corrupted system files. I have yet to lose an XP installation (well yes...my HD died a couple months ago).

i eat my hard drives.

i don't do anything evil to them, and i've had win2k running great for like a year and a half. but all of a sudden i took out my delta and put it back in a couple weeks later, and now the hard drive is fucked. i did a fresh install on win2k and now my computer stalls during the first boot up when you are stil installing IF it gets that far. this is my only real problem ever, and its BIG. Im on my lapop right now, thankfully i have this for school etc. I can't get to the bottom of it. reinstalled a couple times, no luck. I installed Mandrake Linux 8.1 and it worked like a charm instantly. Has MS marked my HD because i let my brother use my win2k cd??? big brother is coming to get you with DRM!!! run for the hills!

I ask the question too. WHY? I've always been under the impression that 2k sucks for recording.

You must have gotten the wrong impression. 2K works great for recording. Very stable. All XP is is 2000 with a more Mac-like interface.

Are you using the Delta with XP now? I'm just curious, last time I looked there were problems (at least with the Delta 1010) with XP, but I haven't been keeping up with it and I'd like to know if it's OK now

right now my delta is plugged into a box that wont start. funny because with the exact same setup it worked for 1.5 years. still trying to figure ou what happened.

Delta works with XP with ASIO drivers. The WDM drivers may have a problem.

- - - It's fairly pointless to say that in general terms one particular Windows OS is more stable than any other. You can find any number of people that had good results with one that others had unacceptable results, and both groups think their opinion is correct because "they was there." It pretty much comes down to whatever works for the setup you've got: none of the WinOS's come with a money-back-crash-proof guarantee, and there are reasons for that. Every time MS has come out with a new OS, they insisted that it was the most stable/most secure ever and had fewer problems. ....... XP is the worst memory hog of them all---I don't know much about writing operating systems, but I'd call that a big step backwards.

now here`s a healthy question.. I upgraded from a super stable win98 to 2K, I had all kinds of problems getting everything settled down so I then upgraded to XP. I like it but it drags sometimes when editing in realtime. What hoops do I jump thru to get my drive with all its contents back to win98, and can I?

Never, ever just upgrade your OS, especially from Win98SE to 2K or XP.

Do I clean install, wipe out everything (back all important stuff up of course).

I had a nightmarish experience with 2K when I tried to just upgrade.

NOw that I reformatted the HD then installed 2K, the thing is so much more stable than 98.

yup, thats always the best way. I just hate wiping the slate clean and doing all that damn re-install for each program.

I keep a mirror drive ("JIC") I may wipe one dry and do it that way for grins and then try to backgrade-OS the mirror drive and see if it works.
