Hi all. While I'm anxiously waiting for the UPS truck to deliver my NTK, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this old mic I have. It's a Sony ECM-56F. (Harvey, I know you have an ECM series mic in your locker). I haven't pulled it out in some time now, and I'm wondering if anyone knows this mic, and has anything good, bad, or indifferent to say about it.
Cheers, RD

Going strictly from memory:

This was their mid priced broadcast mic, electret cardioid condenser but I don't remember if it was battery powered (I don't think it was). It had a pretty good response (something like 40 to 18,000) and it was built around the mid to late 70s. IT had a 1/2" diaphragm as I recall, but the upper housing was a little bigger than the rest of the barrel. I'd say it would be similar to a Shure SM-81. It was a good mic as I remember.

Harvey - it appears you survived the 60's with your memory intact. Right on all accounts. I've had this one since 79'. I used one in a studio in Berkley, and liked it enough to find one for myself. I'll have to put it up and see how it sounds these days. I don't think I've tracked through it since I hung up my degauser and alignment tapes for good.
Love reading your posts here, thanks for passing along the knowledge. Love the picture of you walking across the stage at the Miami Pop festival. I watched the late 60's from the backseat of the family stationwagon. I remember driving through Big Sur, on our way to Alaska in 68', and my dad saying "my god, they've taken over the place", referring to all the hippies. I knew something wonderfull was going on, and I wanted to jump out of that stationwagon and find out what it was, just hide in the bushes till the stationwagon was gone. I was only nine at the time, so I watched from my window with wide eyes. To this day, I wish I had jumped. If you ever write your Memoirs, sign me up for a copy.
Take care, RD
